[Question #11857] Risks from unprotected oral

Hello Doctor,

Thank you for the guidance on my previous situation. I felt like I was almost over of it and then got into another situation. I have read tons of similar situations like what I am about to describe but feel like everyone posts thinking their situation is unique which in most cases isn't. Even after knowing this, I am looking for your guidance on my situation.

I (M46) was in Vegas 10 days ago for a friend's bachelor party and an expensive stripper (F) was giving me a private lapdance and ended up initiating unprotected oral for about 10 seconds (no deep throat) + saliva as lubricant then the panic set in and I stopped it and nothing else happened after that. I waited 5-6 days for the G & C symptoms and there weren't any but still got tested on day 6, tests came out clean. I am pretty sure some of my anxiety is still being triggered by the previous regrettable situation but wanted to know what is my risk of HIV. Should I get tested? Both of you have mentioned multiple times that there has never been a proven case for the person who receives a BJ but wanted to know if the Vegas + stripper situation changes those odds.

Also, okay to resume unprotected activities with my long-time partner?

Welcome back to our forum. Thanks for your continued confidence in our service. In preparing to respond I reviewed your early interaction with Dr. Handsfield and I’m struck by the similarities. The encounter you described was very low risk.

Strippers and commercial sex workers in Las Vegas have very low rates of STI‘s including HIV. If anything, I would anticipate that infection rates for both HIV and other STI‘s are probably lower in Las Vegas than elsewhere. Your partner was a relatively high-end commercial sex worker and as such is unlikely to be infected with HIV. Further, as you already know, there has never been a proven case of HIV acquired to receipt of oral sex. With respect to HIV, I see no reason for concern and no medical or scientific reason for testing.

Regarding other STIs, there is a low risk of acquiring gonorrhea from receipt of oral sex. Pharyngeal gonorrhea is uncommon, and even when partners are infected, most single exposures do not lead to infection. That said if there were any STI that I might test for it would be a urine test for gonorrhea, and in my opinion, that course of action is entirely up to you, depending on your level of anxiety.  We’re I are you, I would not bother to seek testing at all and would not hesitate to have unprotected sex with my regular partner.  EWH

Thank you, Dr. Hook.

I did not have any symptoms till day 6 (on day 10 today) but still did the urine test on day 6 for gonorrhea. It came out negative.

My takeaway is that with the gonorrhea test negative, and considering there isn't HIV risk in my situation, I should move on with my life and put this anxiety behind me.

Can you confirm my assessment?

I agree 100 with your assessment and if I you were the same situation. I would be moving on without any concerns whatsoever. EWH---
