[Question #11864] Testing window / exposure

On August 6, I had a meeting with a prostitute. There was no oral sex, and everything was absolutely protected with a condom. However, while trying to insert my penis into her anus, the condom broke. To be honest, I don't remember very well due to being under the influence of alcohol, but as soon as I realized, we stopped everything. I had the test on the 21st (14 days later) for 4th gen + HCV + RPR + TPHA. All were negative. On the 25th (18 days later), I repeated the HIV test, which also came back negative. What are the chances of a false result? What are the chances of being infected? Should I test again?

Welcome back to the forum.

I scanned your previous threads from a few years ago. As you were advised then, the large majority of female sex workers do not have HIV. Congratulations for having safe sex -- too bad the condom broke, but even if your partner had HIV or syphilis, your risk of becoming infected with HIV was under one chance in a thousand. The negative blood tests at 14 days don't mean anything -- too early -- but absence of a penile sore (chancre) within 2 weeks is itself strong evidence you didn't acquire syphilis. Your negative results at 18 days are reassuring about both HIV and syphilis, but still not conclusive. For 100% reliable results, repeat both the syphilis and HIV 4th generation blood tests 6 weeks after the event. Since your risk was very low, you can expect both tests to remain negative.

I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.
