[Question #11886] HIV / Brazillian

Hello,
I went to get a Brazilian wax done. The moment I went in the room I got the ICk . There was something wet on the floor. The sticks and hair/papers were exposed in the trash and I noticed they had towels on the bed. She told me to get undressed from waist down and lay on the towel and cover myself with the other towel. While inspecting the towel it seemed stained and has some clumps on it. I thought maybe it was dried nail polish since it's a hair salon, nail and wax place and it was washed... Then my anxiety hit afterwards.. what if it was dirty and that clump was dried blood that had traces of HIV. My question is... What is the chance of a HIV transmission on the towel . Does HIV live on material such as a towel? If body fluids were on that towel what are the chances of transmission? Once ripping the hair off my pubic area I had to lay down on that towel. So, all that new, raw exposed skin with some bleeding from the tear I laid on the towel not knowing if it was changed from the previous woman/man getting waxed. Afraid of transmission from the minor cuts, raw skin from the dirty towel. I should have asked for a paper towel or just left. It's just not my nature to complain... Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to comment. The facility you went to certainly sounds like something you'd like to avoid in the future but nothing you describe suggests any risk for HIV or any STI. If the sheets, towels or other things you were in contact with were contaminated with blood or secretions from another person, it is statistically unlikely that that person had HIV or any other sort of infection. HIV and other STI's are not transmitted through contact of your skin with cloth or material which might have been contaminated by secretions or blood from an infected persons. These diseases are never transmitted through this sort of contact. I see no reason for concern and no medical or scientific reason for testing. I would not worry.
If there are further questions, please don't hesitate to use your up to two follow-ups for clarification. EWH

Thank you Dr. Hook for the speedy response. Just to clarify if my skin were to be broken from the hair follicle site because of the harsh ripping and then laying down on a unsanitary towel that might have secretions/ blood transmission would be unlikely. Thank you, thank you again! This will be my last follow up question. And yes, I will not be returning to that facility. :)

I apologize for not mentioning it in my original response. I am aware that the Brazilian wax procedure involves removing hair from the hair follicles and it is not uncommon for there to be minor bleeding during this procedure. Nonetheless, it is a no risk of event. No need for concern, no need for testing. EW. ---
