[Question #11919] Herpes Testing and Results

Hi Doctors. I just had few doubts regarding my test results. My last sexual encounter was around 24th May where I used protection. And before that around 22nd April. Used protection that time too. Due to anxiety, I ended up getting the serum tests for HSV1 and 2. Both IgM and IgG. While both IgG tests were negative. The HSV1 IgM test showed a borderline result. So basically <0.8 is negative and >=0.8 - <1.1 is intermediate. The value I got for my HSV1 IgM test was 0.8 which falls into the intermediate category. The HSV2 IgM test had a value of 0.7 which meant it was negative. My question is.. can a recent HSV1 infection show up 2½ months after my last contact? I do not have any visible sores or blisters anywhere around my mouth or genitals. I do however have an itchy rash/open wound kinda thing with pus on my inner thigh which kinda looks like a jock itch. It does not look like blisters though. While I am reassured with the fact that herpes does not really cause prostatitis as mentioned by Dr. Hook. How can I interpret my HSV results? What does the intermediate HSV1 IgM test mean? Do I have herpes?
I also wanted to update regarding my prostatitis. My prostate is extremely tender as per the doctor after the physical examination. I have acute prostatitis and have been given a combination antibiotics therapy for 15 days. Its a combination of cefpodoxime and levofloxacin. Hope it works though. I'm not really sure how to interpret my herpes tests results.

The IgM test gives many false positive (yours was not positive) and that's why the CDC recommends that it not be done at all. Major labs like the Mayo Clinic stopped doing it many years ago. I'm sorry that someone who ordered this didn't know about that recommendation. So your IgM result should be completely ignored. And new herpes would not show up 2.5 months later.
There is nothing to worry about here.

Hello, thank you for the reply. I do not have any blisters so far hence I'm moving on from herpes. I've been having oral thrush for a while now. Also have terrible body pain, joint pain and fatigue and a body rash. While I know prostatitis cannot be caused by HIV. Can the other symptoms be caused by HIV by any chance? For egs the body pain, the thrush and what not. I'm a bit worried from all the exposures I've had. I've mentioned all my exposures previously. Could it be HIV which then causes an opportunistic infection in the prostate?

No, HIV would not be an opportunistic infection of the prostate, but if you are concerned about your symptoms and your encounters, I would advise an HIV test just to put your worries away.
