[Question #11979] Hiv transmission

Hello dear doctor.

I do not want to cause any confusion for myself or for you, and I do not have a new case, and I will not add any details to my previous case number 11956. I only have questions about the answers provided by dear Dr. Hunter Handsfield.

When the doctor says he cannot say the answer is zero and then says I am not at risk, is this not a contradiction?

Also, the last message I sent to the doctor was my question (Why was it not zero in my case?). The doctor gave an answer that suggests it was zero. Is there a mistake in the wording of the question, as if the doctor wanted to write (Why was it zero in my case?).

All my questions revolve around one question that I want a clear answer to:
1) Is there a risk of transmitting the virus to me through this exposure or is it absolutely zero?

I do not want to cause any confusion or violate any policies set by the site, but I think the difficulties lie in translation and culture as I unfortunately do not know the English language and I do not know anyone in my environment who knows the language, so I use more than one translation program. I hope you can answer in very simple language. Thank you and I appreciate your efforts, gentlemen.

Is there an answer from the doctors? I am not referring her to Dr. Hunter only.

I’m sorry you felt the need to return. And please be patient: we try to answer questions within a few hours, but not immediately.

It is 100% certain you did not catch HIV. I agree that your problem might be one of translation and culture. You’re confusing my comments about a theoretical possibility that HIV could be introduced by the exposure you had and that such transmission has never been known to actually happen. I also cannot guarantee you will not be killed by a meteorite, but I would still advise you have virtually zero chance it will ever happen.

1) I cannot answer any more accurately than I already have. You are not going to be the first person in the world infected by such an exposure. (Also, perhaps it will interest you to know that in the 20 years of this and our preceding forum, with thousands of questions from people worried about HIV, nobody has yet tested positive. You will not be the first. If it finally happens, surely it will be a genuinely high risk exposure — like unprotected sex with a known infected person.

I hope these comments allow you to move on without further worry.

Thank you, Doctor. In the days that have passed from the incident until now, I refrained from any sexual activity with my wife. Now, with these assurances, I will resume that. I truly agree that the language and cultural barrier caused a different understanding of part of our initial interaction.

What remains for me to say to you is that from the time I composed this message, I contacted a local non-specialist doctor who told me there is a doctor named Hunter Handsfield and another doctor named Edward Hook. I will review the research and published scientific papers they have written. I laughed a lot because I am already communicating with them! The local doctors and health organizations in my region - the Middle East - deal with your statements and are greatly guided by your research here. Thank you very much once again, and I am happy with this advice that truly proves its risk was zero, as well as the knowledge I have gained. Thank you again, gentlemen.

Thank you for this information. Although I have had occasional emails or other interactions with a few HIV/STI physicians in that part of the world, I am unaware (and still a bit skeptical) that we have such recognition throughout the Middle East. However, it’s nice to know that some of them apparently are aware of this forum and respect our expertise.

And I’m glad you will resume sexual relations at home!

That completes the two follow-up comments and replies included with each question and so ends this thread. Thanks again for your kind comments.
