[Question #11990] Protected vaginal and unprotected oral

Would you recommend testing after protected vaginal and unprotected oral? It seems like the only risk here is very little from the oral and if after 5 days there is no leakage then no reason to test and to continue sex w my girlfriend
I have hsv 1 so not worried about that and it seems hiv is almost zero risk here
If I do hiv test is 28 days enough on ag/ab or if I do pcr is 14 days enough?
Please advise

Most single exposures to new partners are low risk. Most people do not have STIs and even most unprotected exposures do not lead to infection. Condom use throughout an exposure makes encounters close to no risk for most STIs and no risk for HIV. As you point out the risk from receipt of oral sex is even lower than risk from rectal or genital infections. I agree with your assessment and in the absence of symptoms at 5 days I would probably not test. Further, I would have no concerns about HIV whatsoever as condom protected sex is virtually no risk for HIV acquistion and there are no proven cases in which someone has acquired HIV from receipt of oral sex.
Personally, I would not bother to test for HIV at all but if I were going to test, a PCR test at 14 days would be conclusive, as would a 4th generation test 6 weeks following exposure. EWH

Thanks Dr Hook. Seems like you confirmed what I thought
One last thing, the PCR test is only valid at 14 days or if someone took it at 21 days it would still be accurate?

HIV Renee’ PCR tests are valid virtually conclusive anytime more than 11 days following an exposure. thus, a 21 day PCR test would certainly be reliable EWH---

Sorry I was dictating, that was a typo. It should’ve read. “HIV RNA PCR tests…”. EWH---
