[Question #12022] Kissing

Exposure: Brief kiss (5-10 seconds) with some tongue during a lap dance at high end strip club. 2 days later developed some sniffles and post nasal drip. Also felt very tired and slight headache and brain fog. The tip of my tongue has also felt tingly but I haven’t had a fever or any weird blisters etc. and it’s been over a week. I’ve been very anxious since the incident because I know it was wrong and haven’t felt like eating. I asked the girl if she was tested for oral stds recently and she said yes and that she had none. From your experience what would you say are the chances I acquired any STD from this brief kissing incident? 1 in 100/1000/10000 etc? Thank you.

Welcome back to the forum. I’ll be glad to comment on your questions.
As a generalization, kissing is a low risk activity in terms of STI risk. Even if you don’t believe what your partner said, most people do not have oral STI‘s and even when they do transmission through kissing is quite uncommon. Further, in your specific case, the brevity of your exposure reduces your risk still more.
The symptoms should describe, sniffles and a tingling tongue are not symptoms of an STI. In fact, most oral STI‘s are asymptomatic. In addition for symptoms due to an STI to begin only two days after an exposure would be most unusual. If you did acquire an STI from kissing, the STI, which would be most likely to occur would be oral gonorrhea. I would estimate your risk of acquiring oral gonorrhea from the exposure you describe as being substantially less than 1 in 1000 ( I. E. Odds are more than 99.9% that you were not infected). Personally, I would not be worried in the least about the event you described, and would not bother to test. Should you desire the reassurance that a negative test provides, the most important test you could get would be an oral swab for gonorrhea.
I hope this information and perspective is helpful to you. Please don’t worry. EWH.

Thank you. I’ve had severe anxiety for a week and have lost close to 10lbs from lack of appetite and stress. I was thinking the occurrence of oral gonnorhea transmission was up for debate and, if it did occur, was pretty much between men with men partners..
So in your opinion I shouldn’t worry about oral gonn or any other STIs from the kiss? Wouid you continue normal relations with your wife without fear of exposing her to an STI? Thank you again.

Your risk of oral Gonorrhea is minuscule. I would not be worried.
I see no reason to abstain from unprotected intercourse with your wife.

Thank you. To close this out, my tongue is still tingling and burning and I have a weird taste in my mouth going on 2 weeks. There are No physical changes in my tongue, mouth or lips. Do you think I contracted HSV-1 from this brief exposure?

The symptoms you describe her not at all suggestive of oral herpes. If you were having an initial episode of oral herpes, we would expect to see open sores. I wonder if your efforts to look for symptoms whether you are noticing otherwise normal sensations. Certainly what you describe in no way suggest an STI.
As you know, we provide up to three responses to each clients question. As this is my third response, the thread will be closed shortly. I urge you not to worry. EWH.
