[Question #12054] Possible HIV exposure?

Hello Doctors,
I had an exposure on the 24th of August with a sex worker from a massage parlor . She was Colombian and gave me oral sex with a condom . I was going to begin to have intercourse but I wasn’t fully erect . I was very nervous. I am not sure if I penetrated as she kept telling me to stop taking it out. After struggling for 2-3 min I stopped and ended the meet. I removed the condom and felt a liquid as I took it off however I believe it was the lubricant from inside the condom. I didn’t check it .
I left and have been thinking about potentially exposing myself to HIV . I’ve been having a cough and sore throat for several weeks now and my latest test was September 26 and everything was negative.
My question is , what are the chances of my exposure becoming a positive HIV test since I am still in the window period from that encounter? And still have a cough and sore throat. Could these symptoms be Acute HIV since they lasted weeks.
I will make 6 weeks come OCT 8.

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your question.

There is virtually no chance you have HIV. Oral sex is no risk; there are few if any proved cases of HIV transmitted oral to penis, even without a condom. And even with entirely unprotected vaginal sex, the risk of male infection if the woman is infected is under one chance in a thousand. And anyway, the vast majority of such women do not have HIV. Your negative test 4 weeks later is nearly conclusive. You don't say exactly which blood test you had, but that test almost all others routinely provided by most labs would be positive by 4 weeks.
I hope you're planning on an antigen-antibody (AgAb) test, i.e. 4th generation test. A negative result -- which is what you can expect -- will be conclusive. So stay mellow while you wait. All will be well.
I hope these comments are clear. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Hello ,
I have waited two more weeks and tested once again . The test was named HIV AG/AB Combo EIA from a blood draw and sent to a lab . The result was non reactivé .
This is day 50 post potential exposure .
I had to get a redraw for a second test due to the lack of specimen and they also ran another test called “HIV-1 RNA , QN, RT-PCR ref “ and those results also came back normal .
My question is , Are these results conclusive or should I retest once I hit the 90 day mark in order to be 100% sure I am not HIV positive? Also I would like to know the difference between the two test I took if possible .
Thank you.
My question is that this is

The AgAb test measures both a protein that is part of the virus (p24 antigen, the Ag part of the test) and antibody to HIV, produced by the immune system against the virus (the Ab part). The PCR test looks for RNA (genetic material) of the virus. Either of these tests is 100% conclusive at the times you had them; either one alone would have been equally strong proof. You definitely do not have HIV and do not need another test at 90 days or any other time.---

There is no reason you cannot safely have sex with your gf. That's what I would do if somehow I were in your situation.
That completes the 2 follow-ups included with each question and so ends this thread. I hope the discussion has been helpful. Best wishes and stay safe.
