[Question #12082] HIV testing

Hello, I am a 26 year old male from the United States. I had a sexual encounter with stripper on may 25. We had vaginal sex with a condom and she also gave me oral with the same condom. We only had sex for a couple of minutes before I stopped because I was having trouble keeping an erection. After I started getting worried that maybe I had contracted something from the encounter. On June 30 I went and got a HIV test. It was a 4th gen Ab/Ag lab test that took blood from a vein in my arm. The test came back non-reactive. Still worried because of window period I took a Insti 3rd gen rapid test at a HIV pharmacy on Aug 15( 80 or 81 days after the encounter). The test came back negative. I was just wondering if these two test are conclusive or should I retest again?

I also forgot to add, I did have some symptoms after the encounter such as a sore throat, cough and diarrhea but I believe it could have been due to stress. Thank you for your service.

Welcome to our Forum. Thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to comment. Your risk for HIV or any other STI from the exposure you describe is virtually zero. Condom protected sex is safe sex and most persons do not have HIV. Your subsequent tests PROVE that you sere not infected. I see no reason for continuing concern and no reason for additional testing. It's time for you to move forward without concern.
Your tests prove that your symptoms are not due to HIV. EWH

Thank you Doctor I appreciate your rapid response. I just wanted to add that I messed up when writing my question. I didn’t take the test on June 30, I took it on June 24. So 29 days after the encounter. Is that enough time to get accurate results form the 4th gen Lab test? I know the cdc says the window period is 45 days.

At 28 days, more than 98% of tests that are going to turn positive have done so. Technically there is little chance that your test will become positive between now and day 42 however there is a very, very tiny chance. We have never seen or heard of a person with a test negative at 28 days who went on to become positive but there is a very, very small chance. EWH---

Thank you once again Doctor. You have definitely helped put my mind at ease. The internet is filled with so much misinformation, I wish I’d had discovered this forum so much sooner. For my final question, Since I took the 4the gen test at 29 days and the 3rd gen rapid test at 80 days, would you recommend me taking another test since it’s been past 90 days or can I be confident that I’m HIV free?

As you know, we provide up to three responses to each client’s questions. This will be the final response and then the thread will be closed.
Third generation, HIV antibody only tests are conclusive 8 weeks following an exposure. Thus your 80 day test is conclusive. You can be confident that you do not have HIV. I see no need for further testing.
This completes this thread. Take care. EWH
