[Question #12083] Trichomoniasis and M. Genitialium

Hello Docs!
I had protected wax with a female I had met on a dating app and while we were in foreplay, my penis entered her Vagina for about 7 seconds before I put the condom on. I had a full std panel test done 6 days after exposure (did not include Trichomoniasis or M. Genitialium) and everything was negative. I then proceeded to have unprotected intercourse with my partner 8 days after exposure ( 2 days after negative results). I retested with a full panel (including Trich and M. Genitialium) 7 weeks after exposure and everything was negative.
1) I’ve read multiple article about Trich clearing up after a few weeks on its own. Given the gap between exposure and testing (7 weeks) would it still be possible to contract it, pass it on to my partner, have it clear on its own, and test negative 7 weeks later? (NAAT Urine test was used)
2) same for M. Genitialium?
3) I’ve read the NAAT iron test in males can’t really be conclusive. Why?
4) Would retesting for both Trich and M. Genitialium with negative results be considered “conclusive”?
Thanks

I would like to add the exposure itself was just the head of my penis coming into contact with her vaginal fluids for 7 seconds. There was technically no penetration before the condom was put on.

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your question. For all of the reasons you describe, the encounter you describe was very, very low risk for any STI. The absence of symptoms at this time further assures you that you did not get an STI. In response to your specific questions:
1) I’ve read multiple article about Trich clearing up after a few weeks on its own. Given the gap between exposure and testing (7 weeks) would it still be possible to contract it, pass it on to my partner, have it clear on its own, and test negative 7 weeks later? (NAAT Urine test was used)
You are being paranoid. You need to move on.
2) same for M. Genitialium?
Yes. In the absence of symptoms, there is no reason to be worried about M. genitalium which may, or may not, be an STI.
3) I’ve read the NAAT iron test in males can’t really be conclusive. Why?
I have no knowledge of what you are talking about. NAATs are the current gold standard for STI testing. This sounds like internet misinformation
4) Would retesting for both Trich and M. Genitialium with negative results be considered “conclusive”?
Your results are conclusive. RE-testing will serve to confirm what is already obvious- you were not infected with the exposure you have described. EWH

Thanks Dr. Hook. From your experience, can Trich be asymptomatic and test negative on a Urine test? Everywhere I read it states it’s a possibility. Apparently it’s one of the least studied STD.

You are correct that trichamonas is not as well studied as other STIs.
The infection can certainly be asymptomatic. That said I would encourage you to believe you tests. EWH

Thank you Dr. Hook. The possibility of pregnancy and my partner having asymptomatic Trich is what sparked this whole spiral. I retested again for Trichomoniasis and M. Genitialium, all negative. Officially conclusive at this point?

As you know, we provide up to three responses to each clients questions. This will be my final response. I suspect you anticipate it. You are worrying needlessly and should consider your test results conclusive. It is time for you to move forward without concern. There is no need for further testing.
This concludes this thread, which will be closed shortly EWH
