Dear Dr.
i have a concern regarding exposure that I don’t know how to describe.

It was with a new female partner, we had anal sex, afterwards in about 12 hours i started to have burning sensation while urinating. I dont know if it was STD or not but immediately i stopped having sex with her and i took antibiotics, symptoms improved.

After that i started to become worried about hiv
I did multiple test my self up to 9 months.

I told her to test hiv with me and she did that as well and it was about 10 months after the we had sex.

But I’m still woried about hiv as I read that in 1994 there was 2 cases out of 41 developed antibodies in around 1 year.

My Q, did you ever sow pt seroconverted after 6 months.

Second Q, if she was really HIV and her 4th generation was negative up to 10 months, meaning that she did not have enough p24 to be detected, would that be considered a no risk since the viral load is low?

Thank you

Welcome to the Forum.  Thanks for your questions.  I'll be glad to comment

First, your symptoms are not due to an STI.  The symptoms of an STI would not start within 12 hours of exposure.  On occasion during rectal intercourse rectal bacteria enter the penile urethra and can be irritating but this is not an STI and does not put partners at risk.  Antibiotics may have helped or this may have been going away by itself.

You have tested more than you need to.  Your tests prove that you did not acquire HIV.  Please stop testing.  there is no need for further testing for HIV.  The information you read, apparently on the internet is absolutely incorrect.  I have NEVER seen or heard of a person develop a reactive HIV test of any sort more than 8 weeks after exposure, no matter what sort of test is used.  Most typically tests are positive within 4 weeks of an exposure.

If she really had HIV (which is unlikely), you did not get it.  Worrying that it would have been missed is a waste of time.

I hope this information is helpful.  You have nothing to worry about related to the encounter you describe.  EWH

Dear Dr.
Thank you for your reply

In regards to the information I provided for the 2 cases, they were in the past ( 1994), however it is there in this article.

Can you reassure me in this regard.

Thank you.

You quote the results of a nearly 30 year old study published in a minor journal which has not been conformed.  You are worrying needlessly.  EWH---

You are correct. There is absolutely no doubt that you have proven that you did not acquire HIV from the encounter you describe. Your results are conclusive. No further testing is needed. I hope that the information I have provided to you will be reassuring and allow you to move forward without continuing anxiety. EWH.---
