[Question #12204] HIV from oral sex

Hello, how are you? I write again because of the topic of our last discussion. 12 weeks ago I performed oral sex on a man, where there was no ejaculation. After 3 days I had a fever and throat infection, which I still have to this day.
In these weeks I took 4th generation ECLIA HIV tests on days 28, 43, 52, 64 and 83, and a third generation immunochromatography test on day 77 after that exposure, all negative, but I still have really a really bad sore troath, which is very inflamed and hurts and burns a lot, and does not heal despite treatment and antibiotics. I'm sure whatever infection I have in my throat has something to do with the exposure of that day.
Tomorrow I'm going to take a cualitative PCR test to make sure it's not HIV. Do you think the result will change? Have you seen any results that have changed after week 12? Could ARS symtoms start as soon as 3 days after and last up to 12 weeks? I'm nervous to death. Thank you for your time.

Welcome back to the Forum.  Thanks for your questions.  I'll be glad to comment.  In preparing to answer your questions I reviewed your recent interaction with Dr. Handsfield including when he said "your symptoms could not have been caused by HIV; and your test results prove with certainty you do not have HIV."

I am confident that your HIV RNA PCR test will not change.  Your results are already conclusive and I have never seen nor heard of a test which changes after 12 weeks.  Further, to begin 3 days after an exposure is too soon to be the ARS and ARS symptoms would not last more than 2 weeks- most typically they last about a week.

Please don't worry.  I suggest that you see your doctor to find out what is causing your symptoms.  It is not HIV and probably is not an STI.  EWH

Thanks for your response. I wrote again mainly to reduce my anxiety regarding this topic as I wait for my results. Tomorrow I will take the test and in these days I will let you know my results. I hope everything turns out well.

I look forward to hearing your test results.  EWH

Well... as you said, the test did not detect the presence of the virus. The sensitivity of the test is 129 cells/ml, that is quite sensitive and it would detect if I had the virus right? I ask this because some people say that over time this test loses sensitivity, which I thought that did not happen, especially with this type of test.
I also saw that this test is only to detect HIV-1, but the other tests I had would have detected the HIV-2, right? I also live in Latin America, and I don't know if there are many cases of that strain in here.
Anyway, thank you very much for the help, it has calmed me down in a moment of great anxiety.
I wish you the best!

When persons have HIV they typically have tens of thousands or even millions of of viral particles present not hundreds.  All tests have what is called a "limit of detection" which is based on careful studies of how much virus can be expected to be present in infected persons.  Your PCR test result is conclusively negative.

Correct, you other tests certainly would have detected HIV-2 if present.  HIV-2 is uncommon in Latin America, as it is in North America.

As you know, we provide up to 3 responses to each client's questions.  This is my final response.  The thread will be closed shortly without further replies.  Please don't worry.  EWH

You were clear.  No change in my assessment.  You need to relax and move forward without concern.  EWH---
