[Question #12240] Bleeding after sex - unprotected oral 5 months ago

Good morning,
I hope this finds you well. 23 weeks ago I received unprotected oral from a man. He said that he tests regularly and did not have any infections. I, nor my wife, have had any discharge or burning during urination.

Last week, and again last night, my wife bleed after sex. There was a small-fair amount of blood on both of us afterwards. There was slight spotting the day after too. This isn’t her period as this is the only instances of bleeding. This has never happened before. Can this be indicative of an STI from my encounter 5 months ago? Google says yes(lol). She is going to the doctors on Tuesday but I cannot stop stressing about it.
Thank you for your time.

Welcome to our Forum.  Thanks for questions.  I'll be glad to comment.  Your wife's plans to go to her doctor is absolutely the right thing to do.  Small amounts of bleeding following sex is a non-specific finding with many possible causes, often related to inflammation of some sort at the cervix (the mouth of the uterus).  Some STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can be associated with the sort of bleeding you describe but so can a long, long list of other problems.

The likelihood that you acquired an STI from receipt of oral sex is very low.  When STIs are present, the typically cause symptoms such as discharge and burning on urination.  Any STI you might have acquired from the exposure you describe (again, this is unlikely) would have been symptomatic long ago and in many cases, would have resolved.

Again your wife is doing the right thing.  Try not to let your anxiety get the best of you.  Part of how to do this is to stay off the internet which will likely mislead you if you search for bleeding following sex. Much of what is there is out of date, incorrect, taken out of context or just plain wrong.  EWH

Thank you, Dr. Hook.
Your comments are reassuring.

At this point in time would testing reveal anything even if I was positive? Also, You said that they would have resolved by now, I was under the impression that the only way to resolve them would be to take antibiotics. Is that generally the case?
Thank you again.

The STIs most common following receipt of oral sex (and I repeat, such infections are uncommon) are gonorrhea and chlamydia.  When present about 50% of them will resolve without antibiotic therapy within 6 months of infection,

I see little benefit to testing at this time- test results will probably not be available until after your wife sees her doctor.  I anticipate you'll find that there is an alternate explanation.  EWH
