[Question #12338] HIV from kissing someone with a mouth sore (in me)?

Hi doctors, I (a male) kissed a woman when I had a small healing mouth sore about 6 weeks ago. It was not entirely deep kissing, but somewhat deep kissing. I kissed her like 6 times on and off. I made sure it was not entirely deep kissing. I was on a date with a woman. I did not know her. I did not see blood in her mouth, at least not what I could see. my mouth sore was gone next day. but the next day, I got up and began to feel bad. ( I should note I was already getting headaches and neck pain before this kissing incident; I was having out a coffee shop a lot where people were sneazing and cold weather came). But after the kiss, with a day or two I began to feel really bad, with a sore throat getting worse, and body aches. I did not have a rash, but after two weeks I got 1 small dot and two raised small bumps on the lower part of body, near the right hip. I did not have a fever, and no noticeable night sweats. I began to feel warm as if i have the flu. I was sneezing somewhat too. But my sore throat continued into six weeks (currently), and I still have body body aches. I am really afraid I might have gotten HIV from this kissing. And 24 days after the kiss, I did an HIV 4th generation duo test (in the United States). It was NEGATIVE. I heard 28 days is like 95 accurate. Do I need to retest at 45 day mark? The lady said she tested for HIV after I expressed fear and was negative. she said she had genital herpes though. Stragely after kissing my herpes on the nose came back. I am really scared.

Welcome to our Forum. Thank you for your questions and your implied confidence in our service. I'll be glad to comment. Your encounter was low risk- HIV is not transmitted by kissing, even deep kissing and the presence of a sore on your lip does not change that. In addition, you can be sure that the symptoms you have described are NOT due to HIV or any other STI. You already had some symptoms (headache and neck pain) before your date and the symptoms which began the next day (sore throat and body aches) began too soon to be caused by HIV or other STI. In addition, your own negative 4th generation test 28 days after the encounter also prove that your symptoms were NOT due to HIV since when symptoms are caused by HIV, tests are always positive.
In addition, I can tell you that when tests are performed at 28 days after an encounter, they detect over 98% of recent infections.
Finally your partner's negative test also proves that you do not have HIV. HIV is not transmitted by persons with negative tests.
I would not worry further about HIV. I see no need for further testing related to this encounter. EWH

Dear Dr. Hook, Thank you so much.
1. Note my 4th generation Lab test was done after 24 days, and NOT at 28 days. Does that change your advise about retesting after 6 weeks since the test was after 24 days of the kiss?
2. Also, after the kiss I developed a sharp pain in my urethra, within a week or so; that was really strange and I have had no sex for 11 years and always used condoms even before then; I am basically celibate. Also I got lymph nodes swollen (I had gotten sick like this before). And my sore throat continues and so do the body aches. And my stomach area also began to be really s painful, and the pain travelled to my urethra; it feels like it is almost like a nerve pain. And also I began to itch 3 days after the kiss.
3. Other things is I have ulcertative colitis, and I wonder if that make more vulnerable to HIV from kissing?
4. I hope she was telling me the truth about her HIV status.
5. I dont know how to explain my persistent symptoms.

And I hope she is telling me the truth. She said she went go tested for HIV after I asked her about status because I kissed her. But she did tell me she had genital herpes after i kissed her and said she would understand if i did not want to see her. I never saw her again because I told her I could not see her because of her genital herpes. At least she was honest about that.

1. The data I provided were for 28 days. There are not good data for 24 days but it is probably less
2. No change in my assessment. An oral infection would not cause urethral discomfort and urethral pain is not a sign of HIV
3. No
4. Most people tell the truth
5. Nor do I but it is not HIV or an STI. You should discuss with your doctor if it is troubling you
I think you are worrying unnecessarily. You have one follow up remaining. EWH

Thanks for the response.
1. Since I am in my mid 50s, would the antibodies take more time to produce? Also I am not in the best health as I have colitis and chronic (suspected) brucellosis, which I have I yet to get rid of (got it in france a few years ago while eating cheese). So would 4th generation not be accurate at 24 days in my case?
2. Also, I checked for mono thinking this is mono. Test says I have IgG but normal IgM; I dont know it can still make me ill. I heard mono can give false positives? Can it generally interfere with hiv testing?
3. This kissing has been a nightmare, and i never thought kissing was so dangerious and risky. Or that it carried even a little risk! If I dont get better and decide to test again at 6 week mark, I will let you know. I know you said dont test. SOmetimes overtesting is bad because the 4th generation lab test can give false positives right?
thank you so much,

Aslo doctor, I was racking my brain about what made me ill.; remember I began to get severe heaches and stiff neck before this kissing incident. After talking with a friend, and explaining what I had been eating, she suggested litseria. My symptoms match. Until a few days ago, I was eating different kinds of foreign cheeses; even bree cheese was recalled sometime ago. . My symptoms clearly match litseria symptoms. So I will try treating it. It could explain these symptoms. And now we are having a salmanillae outbreak, as you may have heard.

Final Responses. There should be no need to return to the Forum with additional questions:
It takes no longer for you to make antibodies than anyone else Age is not a factor
2. Also, I checked for mono thinking this is mono. Test says I have IgG but normal IgM; I dont know it can still make me ill. I heard mono can give false positives? Can it generally interfere with hiv testing?
Mono does not interfere with the accuracy of HIV tests. Mono can be acquired through kissing and can mimic the symptoms of recently acquired HIV. Again, THERE IS NO REASON FOR YOU TO THINK YOU HAVE HIV
Testing as always a personal decision. I did not say don't test, I said there is no need for further testing. some of our clients choose to test for the comfort that seeing a negative tests gives them. if you test, i am confident the test will show that you did not acquire HIV from the encounter you described.
This completes this thread which will no be closed. You should not return. If you do, your question may not be answered and your posting feel will not be returned. I hope that you will get over your guilt and anxiety. EWH
