[Question #12370] Worried Mom

I have never been clinically diagnosed with HSV2 but I’m positive I’ve had it since 2017 after an encounter. I got a painful boil on my thigh. Had a bad uti and yellow discharge. I was tested for several STDs but they were negative. In 2018 I had an outbreak after almost every period. I’m not on any medications and now I don’t get many outbreaks. My son last year had a single boil on the shaft of his penis with a sore throat and runny nose. I took him to urgent care but the boil was not looked at. He has been getting a reoccurring boil in the crease of his thigh. He just recently got one I took him to the Dr. she looked at it and gave him antibiotics. He’s a virgin no oral sex and no penetration at all. I’m so worried that somehow I’ve given him this. I see him scratching sometimes and ask him if he’s itching he says it’s because he has so much hair down there. Could he have gotten it if he made a mistake and used my towel in the shower? Could he have gotten it if he made a mistake and used my toothbrush? Could he get it from using the same toilet, sink as me? My aunt got shingles in the eye could she have gotten it from me someone? I’m worried sick I couldn’t live with myself if somehow I’ve given him this.

I have recently started taking my towel out the bathroom and putting it in my room.  I wipe the toilet after every use. I have been wrecking my brain thinking of all the possible ways he could have picked this up from me somehow. I have drilled him on if he ever made a mistake and used my towel and he says no. I keep thinking maybe I’ve gotten it on the doorknob or I forgot to wash my hands and he touched my hand and picked it up somehow. I pray this is not what’s going on with him. Is it safe for him to live with me? Should I wipe the bathroom down after every use? What if he doesn’t wash his hands after the bathroom could he pick up then? Have you ever had a non sexual transmission case from household activities? Could he have gotten this from a jar of salve or cream. If I used the jar on my private and then he used that same jar on his privates or thighs?

I don't think for a moment that you've given your son herpes.  I'm curious about what your outbreaks have been like, wondering if you actually have HSV for sure.  Herpes doesn't cause a yellow discharge, but rather a clearish one instead.  I would strongly suggest that you have what you consider to be an outbreak swab tested to see if you have HSV for sure and what type, if either, that you have, though your history is more consistent with HSV 2 than HSV 1 genitally.

He would not get this from doorknobs, you don't need to be wiping down the toilet after each use.  He wouldn't get it from a jar of salve.
His "boil" should have been evaluated in person and if it continues, please have someone take a look.  Not because I think it is herpes but because it should be diagnosed.
I have never seen non-sexual transmission of HSV 2.  I have certainly seen people with cold sores transmit through kissing, which I guess is sexual

Thank  you Terri I only had the discharge that was yellow one time which was after the encounter in 2017 with the bad uti that I had as well. I would every month get a small bump on my lip or in the upper pubic area around my period or after. Also when my period comes my thigh will get like a welp like mark. I have Hidradenitis suppurativa.  I get bad boils under my arms. But based on what I googled all of my symptoms have been spot on for hsv2 The current boil that my son recently has, the Dr looked at it and prescribed antibiotics. I did not express my concerns of hsv. He’s also been complaining of a headache for 3months straight which the doc said his sinuses were inflamed and that could be the culprit.

Given your history with HS, I think even more that you should get some confirmatory testing for your HSV.  Herpes doesn't cause boils, as you mentioned in an earlier post, but rather sometimes a water blister.  But certainly up to you.  Nonetheless, I am not the least bit concerned about your son getting HSV from you.  Also, HSV wouldn't cause a three month headache.
