[Question #12394] HIV risk assessment

I had protected sex with female sw and received unprotected oral sex on 11/14Pretty sure condom stayed on the whole time but didn’t check. It lasted less than 5 mins and was not rough. 2 days later I confirmed gonorrhea and now concerned with HIV. I know risk is low but still very anxious. Some symptoms: body felt warm but no fever; red spot appears on arms, back, chest; 3 weeks after I start to notice discomfort in my throat wanting to cough( no pain); 2 days ago left neck feels weird and yesterday notice a lump under my chin (minor bump); minor joint pain thought the body since the exposure. HIV risk?

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your questions.  I'll be glad to comment but first a question.  When you say "2 days later I confirmed gonorrhea" are you saying that you confirmed that you do NOT have gonorrhea or that you acquired gonorrhea.  I presume that you confirmed that you did not acquire gonorrhea.

Irrespective of your reply, the encounter you describe sounds no risk.  Your vaginal sex was condom protected and condoms provide close to 100%protection as long as they di not break (and when condoms break, they break wide open, leaving no doubt that they failed).  As for receipt of oral sex, no one has ever been shown to have acquired HIV from receipt of oral sex.  You will not be the first.  This was a no risk encounter.

In addition the symptoms you describe do not suggest recently acquired HIV.  The symptoms of recently acquired HIV are severe sore throat, high fever, an widespread joint or muscle aches, all of which begin at about the same time, typically 10-20 days after an encounter.  If you wish to prove that your symptoms are not due to HIV you can test- if the symptoms you report are due to HIV, your test will be positive (when symptoms are due to HIV, tests are always positive, otherwise it takes 6 weeks for HIV test results to be conclusive).

I would not worry.  I hope that the information I have provided is helpful.  EWH

Thanks Dr hook. I was confirmed that I contracted gonorrhea that encounter which was what caused my anxiety. Start to think if can get gonorrhea then can I get something else. And I started google and that really pushed me over the edge. Reading from your other post it sounds like it’s pretty common for oral to penis gono infections. As for HIV risk, my only concern has been this discomfort in my throat as it started probably 20 days after but no pain just constantly has to clear my throat and now the lump under my chin. And yesterday I woke up finding some small red blisters dots on the tip of my tongue. I think these are all related and probably cause by something else. Again reading your other posts I get my risk is low probably even remote but still want to double check. I don’t want to get tested. I don’t think I can stomach and seat and wait for the results haha.

Sorry forgot to add the question what’s the odds of a person being asymptomatic during acute stage of HIV? Is it possible for me who is 39 and in pretty good health? I assume my body’s immune system is strong enough where it would have reacted if I was contracted.

Gonorrhea can certainly be acquired from receipt of unprotected oral sex.  Google may mislead you about other STIs - as I said, there are no proven cases of HIV acquired from receipt of oral sex and chlamydia and other STIs are very rare.  The throat discomfort and "blisters" on your tongue certainly do not suggest recently acquired HIV.

Only about 40-50% of persons who acquire HIV develop the ARS symptoms  The remainder are largely asymptomatic.

In your case, I would certainly not be worried about HIV.  I hope this information is helpful. You have 1 follow-up remaining. EWH.
