[Question #12572] Sexual contact

Hi, bit of a query, basically me and a random sexual partner met up , I masturbated a male and digitally penetrated his anus with two fingers, basically this was for around half an hour, for my own protection I wore latex gloves for both touching his penis and also penetrating his anus with my fingers, I used grape seed oil as a
Lubricant, I recently read that oils and vegetable oils etc can degrade latex, this made me worry and think have any fluids penetrated the gloves onto my hands
Once the male had ejaculated I had no contact with the semen, I was fully clothed throughout the sexual contact, my hands may have been a little damp/wet when I removed the gloves- possibly due to my hands sweating with the gloves onto I’m not sure, the gloves stayed in tact and did not rip/tear, I removed the gloves carefully and washed my hands , my question is
1 .do I have any risks of any sti wether , bacterial, blood borne or any skin to skin contact types of sti- mainly  due to not being sure if anything could have penetrated the gloves?
2. If this is possible re the gloves breaking down using grapeseed oil?
I didn’t have any cuts on my hands but I do get dry skin mainly caused by my job

I did my best or so I thought to protect myself but I’m now wondering about my fingers penetrating his anus and if the gloves protected me or not with the use of the oil ,
I soaked a glove in oil and filled with water to see if they glove would leak, it didn’t but after an amount of water if did burst, I did  the same again with a glove that hadn’t been near oil and it seems to not burst as quickly so I’m now panicking wondering if the gloves do in fact degrade with grapeseed oil contact
I asked the person if they were clean and got tested and they said they did- who knows , he said he does have a girlfriend so I’d hope they are clean

Welcome to out from and thanks for your questions, as well as your implied confidence in out service.  To cut to the bottom line, the encounter you describe with a casual partner was a no risk event in terms of STIs, including HIV.  This is the case with or without gloves although gloves would be an effective barrier to STI acquistion had there been any risk.  Your activities all fall into the category of masturbation which is agreed upon as a no risk activity by the CDC, the WHO and experts in the field.

You are correct that oil and in particular, petroleum products although as a generalization, grapeseed oil could have the same effect, does weaken latex products making them more likely to break.  Had your glove broken however, it would have been obvious.  In addition, FYI, the "water test" looking for leaks is a waste of time.

This was a no risk event.  I see no reason for concern and no medical or scientific reason for testing.  I hope this information and perspective is helpful to you.  EWH

Hi Dr Hook
Thank you so much for your reply, so just to clear my mind worse case scenario no gloves and due to having dry skin possibly cracked skin on hands doing the same activity would still have the same outcome?
I only ask as I’ve seen for example a syphillis sore on a hand online so it did make me panic/wonder as there was I suppose friction/ contact  involved
Sorry to ask , as we are no experts like yourselves in this area and I wouldn’t want to wake up in a few months with any symptoms, thanks so much for your help, this service is a brilliant help

My answer would be the same even if gloves had not been used and if you had cry cracked skin or open sores on your hands.  The pictures of syphilis on the hands are there largely because they are so very, very rare.  EWH---
