[Question #12584] Unprotected oral
|
Hi doctors so I'm a bisexual male with a girlfriend. I have had a few encounters of unprotected oral where i was the giver let's say about 5 encounters over five months. 2 times resulted in semen in my mouth. I also had a few encounters with protected anal as the giver. Since these encounters i have had very bad anxiety regarding hiv. What are the chances i acquired it from these events

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to comment. Your risk for HIV is not zero but it is close to that. Congratulations on your consistent condom use for your highest risk activity, insertive anal intercourse- as long as the condoms don't break, your level of protection is excellent. the risk of oral sex is very, very low. To help you with your assessments and moving forward, the levels of risk for HIV acquistion for various unprotected sex acts if a partner happens to have untreated HIV are as follow:
---
Receptive rectal intercourse - risk is ~1 in 100-200
Insertive rectal or vaginal intercourse- risk is ~ 1 in 2000 or less
Performing oral sex- risk is less than 1 in 10,000
Receiving oral sex - there are no proven cases of HIV acquistion
Condoms, of course, reduce the risk to virtually zero when worn throughout the encounter and do not break.
In addition, you can further lower risk by asking a few simple questions regarding does a partner have untreated HIV (treatment reduces transmission risk to virtually zero) and when were they last tested. Most people will willingly provide this information and tell the truth.
Bottom line- your risk is very, very low. I do not feel strongly that testing is needed based on the information you have provided. I do understand that you may choose to test for the reassurance that a negative test provides. If you do chose to test, I anticipate that your result will be negative. I hope that this information is helpful. EWH

I have seen a case or two which appear to have been acquired from performing oral sex on untreated HIV infected persons- these persons had many, many partners over a long period of time. In your situation I would not be worried. I would not hesitate to have unprotected sex with a regular partner. One follow up remianing. EWH---

Okay because I'm scared to get tested. If i continue to approach sex the way i have can i expect to remain hiv negative so unprotected oral and occasional protected anal

Two final comments
Fear of testing makes no sense. It does not change whether or not you are infected but does keep you from having information that is potential helpful to you in terms of both mental and physical health.
I agree that if you continue as you have been there is every reason to believe that you will continue to be free of HIV
This completes this thread. Take care. EWH
