[Question #12669] HIV testing and Risk
|
Hello, I had a question regarding how risky my exposure was and the reliability of my test results.I just tested negative for HIV at 28 days and 16 days after going to a massage parlor and receiving a hand job and she put her finger in my rectum. 2 days after that I unprotected sex with a co worker. She got tested a week or 2 after we had sex and told me she was negative for everything. I was told that I had a low risk exposure by another doctor and he told me that my test at 28 days is very reassuring but recommends a test at 45 days for conclusive results. I just wanted your take on the situation.

Welcome to our forum. Thanks for your question and for your confidence in our service. I’ll be glad to comment. As the generalization and for your information, a fourth generation, combination, HIV antigen/antibody test at 28 days is more than 98% conclusive. Test become totally conclusive by six weeks that is 42 days, after an exposure. Therefore, based on the information you have provided. :
1. Your 28 day HIV test result would have detected more than 98% of recent infections. Because most single encounters are low risk, it is very, very unlikely that you acquired HIV from the exposure you describe.
2. There is no risk for HIV or other STI from masturbation. Masturbation includes your receipt of masturbation, a hand job, as well as the fact that you inserted your finger into your partners rectum.
3. If a partner has a test two weeks following an encounter and is negative, that partner cannot have transmitted HIV to you.
Thus, to summarize, each of the activities you described was very, very low risk for acquisition of HIV. If I were you, I would not bother to test further. On the other hand, testing is always a personal decision, and if you choose to test again 42 days after you’re encounter for 100% conclusive results, I understand.
I hope this information is helpful to you. If anything is unclear, please use you’re up to to follow ups for clarification. EWH.

Thank you very much for the quick reply to my question. Just to clarify, I was not the one that did the inserting of the finger. The woman at the massage parlor inserted her finger into my rectum. I am not 100% sure but I do not recall seeing any cuts or sores on her fingers. I’m assuming that the low risk still applies to this situation, but I just wanted some clarification. Thank you again for your response.

Thank you for the clarification. The insertion of your partners finger into your rectum is also a form of masturbation, and therefore a no risk event in terms of HIV risk. This is the case, whether or not she had cut scrapes or other wounds on her fingers. Still a no risk event.
You have one follow up remaining. EWH.

So would you consider my result to be pretty accurate? As I stated before I tested once on the 16th day and 28th day following exposure, both being negative. The tests were HIV 1 & 2 AB/AG SCRN, W/REFLEX.

This is a repetitive question. As I already said, your exposure was very low risk. There is a less than 2-3% chance that your partner had untreated HIV and even if she did, your risk of acquiring HIV was less than 1 in 2000. THEN , regarding the remaining very, very low chance that you were exposed, your 28 day test results rule out more than 98% of the already tiny chance that you acquired HIV. Bottom line, you are more likely to be struck by lightening than to have acquired HIV.
This completes this thread. Please don’t worry. EWH
