[Question #12670] STI through oral

Hi Doctors,
I hope all is well,
I'm from Toronto and I received unprotected oral from a Masseuse in a massage parlour on Jan 29th and only once. I panicked and on the 6th day after exposure I took 800mg of Cefixime and 1g of azithromycin since i have a long term partner and I don't want to infect her. My main concern is will the Cefixime be enough to help prevent syphillis development moving forward?

Just to follow up I have no symptoms, i've done my urine test on the 6th day as well for gonorrhoea and chlymadia and they came back negative.

Welcome to our Forum and thanks for your questions.  The encounter you describe was low risk, most commercial sex workers do not have STIs ( syphilis in particular) and receipt of oral sex is particularly low risk.  You really did not need to take antibiotics.   Your tests prove that you do not have gonorrhea or chlamydia.  Although not studied for this purpose the cefixime you took would almost certainly prevent syphilis from developing, if exposed.

Should you wish to test to prove that you were not infected with syphilis, you can test with a syphilis blood test 4-6 weeks after your encounter.  EWH

Thank you for your response Dr. Hook. My follow up is that when I took the antibiotics 2.5-3hrs later I had diarrhea, will the preventive measure still be effective?

Diarrhea is a relatively common side effect of the antibiotics you took.  It would not negatively impact their efficacy.
