[Question #12771] NGU or something else?

Received unprotected oral / protected vaginal with CSW in the Carribean on 2/23. 3 days later, felt urethral irritation and slight white discharge. On 3/3 tested negative for Chldya/Gonn but WBC found on swab test. Prescribed doxy for 7 days. I still have urethral irritation. Assuming it's NGU. I have a regular partner, and avoiding sex until I figure this out. When can I resume relations? Would the doxy not clear up any infection going on?

What you describe certainly sounds like non-chlamydial NGU. This is thought to occur when a partner's oral bacteria enter the penile urethra and, being not normally there, cause irritation. Non-chlamydial NGU typically resolves with therapy using either doxycycline, 100 mg twice daily for a week or a single 2 gram dose of azithromycin but is not considered to be something that need to require treatment of partners. The irritation may take a few days to improve. EWH---

Thank you doctor EWH.
Can sexual relations resume after therapy with no worries to my partner, even if the symptoms are not completely cleared up? I've been avoiding sex until I finish the medication (which would be tomorrow), and have not informed my partner of the issue.

Could you describe your persisting symptoms? Is the discharge still present or just the discomfort.
While there is little scientific basis for the recommendation, most experts recommend waiting until therapy has been completed to resume unprotected sexual activity. EWH

Thanks. It may be that what you are detecting is normal sensations and normal urethral secretions. This is not uncommon for persons who experienced symptoms and they are on the "lookout". There is a tendency to amplify findings which might well be overlooked if there had not been an earlier problems.
As you know, we provide up to 3 responses to each client's questions. Thus, this thread is complete and will be closed shortly. EWH
