[Question #12773] Could this be herpes?

I had unprotected sex 5 years ago. Approximately a week later I noticed multiple bumps between labia minora and majora. They appeared firm and fluid filled. I made an appointment at a local clinic. My appointment was 3 days after. I saw a NP who told me she saw nothing there and sent me home. There were no sores or blisters. I brought this up with my gyn who discouraged hsv testing as I have never had sores. I have recently been diagnosed with vaginal atrophy and have soreness at vaginal entrance. I'm also afraid I have vulvodynia. Penetrative sex has always been painful. I'm very anxious about this and fear the unprotected encounter may have led to hsv2. Please advise.

Well, after all this time for you, I would recommend testing to put your mind at rest. You can go right to the very best test, herpes Western blood done only at the University of Washington, but is accessible to all clinicians, or you could start with the IgG test that is routinely available. I would do it at LabCorp as they have the best IgG test around right now. If you do that and it's positive, and you won't confirmation then you could move to the Western blood. Even this good test at LabCorp can have the potential for false positives. Given that you've had no sores or blisters subsequently this is the course I would recommend.
