[Question #12858] Do you have to take PrEP at the same time every day?

Hello,
I’ve heard and seen a lot of conflicting information online about whether you have to take PrEP at the same time every day. I take PrEP daily, but not always around the same time. I’m wondering if I’m any less protected, than if I were to take it at exactly the same time. I’m a circumcised top, and occasionally have unprotected anal sex with crossdressers or trans women. I took DoxyPEP for the first time this morning after an encounter. Partner indicated they were drug and disease free.
Kind regards,
A

Welcome back to the Forum. There is no need to take PrEP medications at the same time every day. In general, to avoid missing doses of any medication it is advantageous to establish a routine for when you take medications but PrEP will be effective if you do not take it at the same time every day. I would not worry about this. EWH---

Why do I see “PrEP works best if you take it at the same time every day?” Is that just to encourage a regular routine? There’s no correlation between that and it being more effective right? The medication being more stable in your blood?

Yes, as I said above and as you have correctly repeated, taking any medicine on a regular schedule is the best way to avoid missing doses. Otherwise taking PrEP at different times in a given day in not going to reduce it's effectiveness. EWH---
