[Question #13000] Oral Sex and STI

Hello
I am adult male.  I had an experience 2 days ago.  I performed oral sex/cunnilingus on a stripper for a short period (minute or two)of time.

What are the chances of me acquiring an STD (including HIV) from this experience?

Do I need to be tested?

Can I continue to have unprotected intercourse with my partner without issue?

Thank you

Welcome to our Forum. Thanks for your questions and your implied confidence in our service.  I'll be glad to comment.

The exposure you describe was very low, perhaps close to no risk.  Most commercial sex workers do not have STIs and even when they do, most single exposures do not lead to transmission.  This is particularly true for cunnilingus which is, biologically speaking, the least efficient mechanism of STI transmission.  Ingestion of infected genital secretions does not lead to STI transmission.  The CDC's estimated risk of acquiring HIV through cunnilingus is 1 infection per 10,000 encounters and that is likely too conservative.  I have never seen a case of HIV acquired in this way.  Of all STIs, the infection most likely to be acquired would be gonorrhea and that risk is quite low, probably substantially less than 1%.

Testing is always a personal decision.  Personally, I would not bother to test or abstain from sex with my regular partner however some of our clients chose to test for the reassurance a negative test provides.  Should you chose to test, the only test I would recommend would be a throat swab for gonorrhea and chlamydia.

I hope this information is helpful.  EWH

Thank you Dr.  I need to stay off internet as there was some discussion of hiv spread this way.
