[Question #13045] HSV1

I was diagnosed with HSV1, which presented as genital herpes, in June 2024 after unprotected sex with a male partner (I am a female). I never had any type of oral outbreak. I was tested for everything and HSV1 was detected with a vaginal swab- blood work was negative so they suspected it was a new infection. My partner admitted to having it. The initial outbreak was my only outbreak. .I've been taking 500mg of Valtrex everyday since (after the initial dose of 1000mg) and plan to continue taking it. My questions are related to infecting a new potential male partner. I plan to use a condom for intercourse. For oral sex, I'm assuming it would be risky for him to perform oral sex on me without protection, but can I perform oral sex on him without protection?

Yes, if your infection is only genital, then you can give oral sex to a new partner without concern of transmission. And the risk of him acquiring HSV-1 orally is probably low because 1) half of US adults already have HSV-1 and 2) the Valtrex would reduce viral shedding significantly and 3) genital HSV 1 is not often shedding because it doesn't like the genital area very much.
I'm a little confused because you said you never had an outbreak but did have a positive swab test? Why was swabbing done?
