[Question #13103] Unprotected oral/Testing Question

Hi Doctors,
I had unprotected oral with ejaculation in mouth on June 6th with a CSW, it is now 3 days past exposure and I have no symptoms. I had found her on a site where you’re able to review your experience with the escort (if that makes a difference). I know my greatest risk would be that of Gonorreah or NGU. However, my question would be at what point if I remain symptomless would I be in the clear? Would you consider abstaining from having sex with a significant other?

One more thing to add: in the off chance gonorrhea is acquired, would having both symptoms of discharge and burning while urinating be present? Or would only 1 symptom be enough for gonorrhea to be believed to be present.

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your questions. Thanks as well for apparently having reviewed our posts regarding similar situations with other clients. Overall, receipt of oral sex is a low risk event and when STIs are acquired, the most common problems are either gonorrhea or non-chlamydial NGU. Symptoms of gonorrhea (penile discharge and burning on urination) occur in over 90% of infected persons within 3-5 days of exposure. The symptoms of NGU which are similar but milder also take longer to occur, sometimes as long a week. If you have no symptoms after a week, it becomes very unlikely that you acquired an STI.
Symptoms severity vary. Some persons may have only discharge. Having said that I would caution you that when persons are anxious about an exposure, they tend to look hard for signs and symptoms and as a result magnify the presence of normal sensations which would otherwise be ignored. If you are concerned, the easiest way to address your concerns is to get tested. Testing any time more than3 days after your exposure will give you reliable results. EWH
