[Question #13112] HIV

|
I had a short sexual relationship with a female work colleague (I am male) whilst on a break from my girlfriend in January. I regret the whole ordeal.
We had unprotected intercourse and oral sex at least 4 times.
Since these encounters, my girlfriend and I have decided to get back together. We are now talking about starting a family. I am petrified about infecting her - particularly with something like HIV!
I had blood samples taken for an HIV Qualitative PCR 21 days after the last exposure with my colleague. HIV 1 and 2 RNA were not detected.
Am I worrying for nothing?
(I have read that the HIV RNA PCR’s are the ‘Rolls Royce’ of testing, hence their expense).
From also reading other posts on this forum, I understand that the virus is ALWAYS detected on these tests by day 11 at the latest?
I appreciate your assistance, Doctors.

Welcome to the forum. Thank you for your confidence in our services.
My first comment is that these sounds like an extremely low risk exposures, assuming your work colleague isn't an injection drug user, part time sex worker, etc. But even more important, the tests you had are completely accurate by 21 days. "Rolls Royce" of HIV testing is a good description and it is true that the virus always is detected by 11 days. The negative result proves you did not acquire HIV. Absence of symptoms by 21 days (discharge from your penis, genital sores) is good evidence against other STIs, although not proof. For additional reassurance, you might consider a urine test for gonorrhea and chlamydia; and a syphilis blood test 6 weeks after the last exposure. You definitely can expect negative results. But I wouldn't wait that long to resume sex with your girlfriend; if somehow I were in your situation, I would already be having unprotected sex with my wife with no worry about infecting her.
I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you for your reply, Dr Handsfield.
My colleague is not a sex worker and I do not anticipate that she injects drugs (however, I do not know everything about her private life).
Am I correct that there is absolutely zero chance my negative status will change based on these encounters; and I do not need another HIV test of any kind?
Thank you for your help.

"...there is absolutely zero chance my negative status will change based on these encounters; and I do not need another HIV test of any kind?" Correct.

So in summary: I’m worrying about HIV for nothing, it’s impossible I have it and I can get on with my life?
I appreciate the thread will now be closed after this.
Thank you for your help and taking the time to assist, Dr Handsfield.

Your "in summary" comment simply repeats the same questions you had previously in different words and the answer hasn't changed. If you need me to acknowledge this particular phrasing, yes it is impossible [you have HIV and can get on with your life.
Thanks for the thanks. I'm glad to have helped. Best wishes and stay safe.
