[Question #13166] HIV risk from sewing needle at tailor

Hello, I hope you are well.

I was wondering about the HIV risk from a sewing needle. I was just at the tailor and she pinned my jeans to hem. When I was taking the jeans off, the sewing needle pricked/scratched my heel on two occasions. I did not see any visible blood but did not check for long. I am concerned that she may have pricked her hand before putting the needle in the jeans by accident and then I was pricked while changing. Would this be considered a potential risk of HIV, even if small & should I get tested?

Kind regards

Welcome back to the Forum.  Thanks for your continuing confidence in our service.  Parts of this question are similar to the interaction you had with Dr. Handsfield 6 months ago in which he said, among other things "The majority of needle stick injuries in medical personnel, even needles that had just been used on HIV infected persons, do not result in HIV transmission. Real risk from contaminated sharp instruments generally requires obvious, visible injury."

If anything, this pinstick was lower risk than that event.  You do not know that you tailor has untreated HIV and it is statistically unlikely.  Further, even if she did, you have no reason to think that she stuck herself with the needle which stuck you.  In addition, the solid pin, unlike hollow point needles of the sort used for injections, do not carry blood from person to person.  Finally even if all of the unlikely conditions mentioned above occurred, HIV becomes non-infectious almost immediately upon exposure to the environment.  I see no scientific of medical reason for concern or for testing.  If you choose to test (testing is always a personal decision) for the added assurance that a negative test would provide, I am confident that the test would show that you were not infected.

We have never seen or heard of a client who become infected in the manner you describe.  There is virtually no chance that you are going to be the first.  EWH

Thanks for providing such a good service.
Ok, I will try to relax, as you can tell I have irrational fears of HIV and needles so it's good to hear from an expert. I don't think I will test in that case.
Thanks again, and have a good summer!

I certainly would not bother to test if I were in your situation.  I agree with your plan.  Please don't worry.  EWH---
