[Question #13189] Gonorrhea Test timeline

Hi, I asked a question yesterday regarding a weak positive urine test for gonnorhea. That was quickly.follow3d up by a swab of the uretha (at home also) instant test. The second test was negative. Dr hook kindly gave his opinion on the reliability concerns on the urine test. I am organising for another test. To clarify the outcome

Questions are
1. Is there a difference in the urine versus swab test? Ie technique used, outcome
2. How.soon after exposure would a swab test be reliable versus a urine test? It's 6/7 days post exposure.

Shoukd.i wait longer to he teststed. Many websites are saying wait 2 weeks for a conclusive test. I still.have no symptoms. Thankyou

I'm, glad to see that you are planning to get professionally tested. I anticipate that the test will show that you are not infected.  In response to your questions:

1. Is there a difference in the urine versus swab test? Ie technique used, outcome
Urethral swab tests are slightly but not statistically significantly most sensitive that urine tests.  Obviously the swab tests involve a bit of discomfort that urine tests do not.

2. How.soon after exposure would a swab test be reliable versus a urine test? It's 6/7 days post exposur
Both swab and urine tests provide conclusive/reliable results any time more than 3-4 days following an exposure.  Testing at this time will be entirely reliable.  Statements on the internet that results are not conclusive until 2 weeks following exposure are another example of internet-based misinformation.

Thank you that all makes sense now. I also read not pass urine one hour before the swab test. Is that recommended and does it make a difference.
After reading reviews of the instant tests it does seem that false positives.and negatives are common amongst reviewers. It just confused me why both my home tests yielded different results
I'm assuming a test  my provider will be sent to a lab? And they use more specific techniques.
Thank you for your clarifications. Here's hoping for a negative result. Out of interest would the same accuracy apply tomchlamydia though from what I've read that shouldn't be an issue.
Whilst I remain symptomless as I.understand it I shoukd belooking for signs of discharge, pain urinated in thr next few days until.my test is arranged. For herpes am I correct in thinking testing isn't recommended and would be low risk but I shoukd jeeo an eye out for sores in the next 3 weeks? Which would be a good indicator for infection with hsv2 . That's all for now. Thankyiu for your service and calming advice.

I presume your provider would send your tests to a laboratory as well.  You should verify this with him/her..  Typically laboratories would use methods more reliable than most rapid tests.  Testing for both gonorrhea and chlamydia are typically done on the same specimen and results for both organisms are equally reliable.

Symptoms of infection would typically be a urethral (penile) discharge and perhaps burning on urination.  Be cautions however, there is a small amount of urethral discharge which is normal and can be over interpreted if one is anxious.  The discharge of these infections should be obvious.

If you were to develop herpes (unlikely) lesions would appear within 10 days of exposure (usually sooner and certainly not longer.

I anticipate your results will show that you are not infected.

You have one follow-up remaining.  After that there should be no need for further questions.  EWH

Tha is Dr Hook

Final.wjeatjons

1. Would.passing urine less than 1 hr before a trst affect thr result?
2. Transmission orally to uteha is around 10.percent ? Lacked of symptoms.is 10 percents so.assuming 1 in.100 chance as it stands?
4
3
.finally ate the asymptomatic strains.of gonnorhea harder to treat ie are they resistant to doxy cyclin3. Etc

Sorry juat a quick addition to my questions.
Should for some reason I test positive. Can I ve certain it came from the unprotected oral. Cab it be present for a while ina relationship orwould.it eventually be cleared by both people? I inky ask as 7 months prior I had the only other exposure. Some positive couldn't have persisted between both me and my partner from then until now. Thanks for your help. That's my last question before the test !!

You are correct- these are your final questions until you have a test result to report.  Any further, anxiety-driven  "what if" questions will be deleted without a response.

1.  Failure to wait an hour before obtaining a urine specimen for testing less than an hour will minimally, if at all, reduce the accuracy of a test for gonorrhea.
2.  There are no precise estimates of the likelihood of a person with oral gonorrhea transmitting infection to another person through oral sex however it is unlikely to be greater than 10% and may be less.
3.  Asymptomatic gonorrhea is no harder to treat than symptomatic infections.  Doxycycline however is NOT recommended for gonorrhea treatment./

This completes this thread.  Do not return with further questions unless you have a test result to report.  EWH
