[Question #13213] Roche HSV1 Test

Hi Terri, hope all is well.
I had a Western Blot a couple years ago and it was negative for HSV1 and 2. My spouse has oral HSV1. I take an IGG at LabCorp once or twice a year to make sure I’m still negative.

I recently tested negative for HSV1 with the Roche test, which is the first time I’ve had this particular test. I am assuming that the Roche test has similar issues to the other IGGs in that it misses some infections, but since it is a better test for HSV2 could that also maybe be the case for HSV1?

I know IGGs aren’t perfect, but it would be to cost prohibitive and time consuming to have 1-2 Western Blots done a year, so are multiple negative IGGs done 2 years after the Blot a good indication that I have not become infected with HSV1?

I’m sorry I want to add this because it just popped up today on my foot. I’m thinking it was a mosquito bite because it was very itchy a few days ago and I scratched at it. Logically I am trying to tell myself this, but my dumb brain keeps trying to say it’s herpes.
I’m worried that maybe I have a genital infection that is to early to be caught in labs right now and this a recurrence on my foot.
The area appears to be a single  raised bump that had a tiny yellowish scab.
Does this sound herpetic? Would an outbreak on the foot be more remarkable than this presentation since it has to break through thicker skin? It’s on the top of my foot.
I’m sorry to add another question on so soon. If you could still ready my questions from the above as well, I would really appreciate it! :)

I believe I answered this on my own forum, but will here again.  You can do the blot as often as you wish and only you can know if it is cost prohibitive.  We don't know yet how much better the Roche test is at detecting HSV 1, compared to western blot.
I don't think that the thing on your foot sounds herpetic to me.  When you have a new infection the first symptoms would almost always show up at the location of exposure - so either orally or genitally for you.  Right?

I’m sorry I’m not sure if this counts as the second post since I added on to my first. Please let me know if I need to pay again.

The main thing I’m worried about is maybe I have it genitally and even though I tested negative again, that maybe I’m not detectable yet on bloodwork. I probably needed to phrase better, I’m sorry. I’m worried maybe I missed genital infection and then the virus is showing on my foot as a recurrence? Or is that very unlikely for a recurrence to show up on the foot? I have pictures, but I don’t think this site allows that, correct?

And I was also wanting to know if you think negative multiple times on IGG after Western Blot is a somewhat good indication that I am still truly negative? I know the IGG isn’t perfect, so I know this would be purely your opinion and not a solid yes or no.

Western Blot is for sure better compared to Roche test, but in your opinion is Roche test better compared to previous IGG used by LabCorp.

Yes, it is reliable that you tested negative for HSV 1 after a blot that was negative for HSV 1.
Yes, the new Roche is a better test than the previous one
I doubt that you have a recurrence of HSV 1 on your foot since your IgG was negative as well as the blot
