[Question #13239] 53 and newly diagnosed with genital hsv-1

Me again- had a blood test 7/14/25. Results received today are as follows: HSV 1 Ab IgG 4.81 High. (I was just diagnosed via vaginal swab 6/11/25, married for 17 years, not suspecting infidelity). Could this mean that I've had this infection for some time, and perhaps this wasn't a primary infection- or am I getting that wrong? HSV2 was normal <0.90. Thank you again.

I suspect yes, you've had this for a while. This happens often in totally monogamous relationships where someone with HSV-1 orally gives oral sex to their partner who didn't have HSV-1 and the negative partner acquires this genitally. You will likely have outbreaks very infrequently, if ever again. I would ask your health care provider for antivirals to take at the first sign of an outbreak and you'll be able to manage this easily.

Thank you for your patience, kindness and encouragement. Still trying to wrap my head around of this. I have no further questions. Your thoughtful replies have answered them all. Hopefully, my questions will help others.
