[Question #13243] Herpes and Pap Smears
|
Hello! Just going to jump right to the questions! Thank you for this service!
* I have read that herpes can sometimes be incidentally picked up on paps? Is this a common thing?
* If herpes is picked up on a pap is it shedding that is causing abnormal cells or an actual outbreak on the cervix?
* Can herpes be the cause of ASCUS or would it show up differently?
* If a pap is abnormal, would they be able to distinguish abnormal from HPV vs herpes?
* I read that herpes displays giant cells, burger confused if this could show up as ASCUS or not, but that may go in hand with the previous question about ASCUS?
* Can herpes he the cause of LSIL or HSIL?
* Are outbreaks on the cervix common? Shedding?
Sorry if these sound silly, but the information available online is just not clear.

So sorry, but I've answer this three times now and it doesn't seem to show up!
I have read that herpes can sometimes be incidentally picked up on paps? Is this a common thing?
* If herpes is picked up on a pap is it shedding that is causing abnormal cells or an actual outbreak on the cervix?
Either - shedding really is an outbreak, though possibly not visible
* Can herpes be the cause of ASCUS or would it show up differently?
Yes, inflammation from herpes activity could show up as ASCUS, according to the lab
* If a pap is abnormal, would they be able to distinguish abnormal from HPV vs herpes?
I believe the two presentations look different, but I'm not 100% sure about this one.
* I read that herpes displays giant cells, burger confused if this could show up as ASCUS or not, but that may go in hand with the previous question about ASCUS?
Herpes can present as mutinucleated giant cells, correct, but it could also show up as generalized inflammation which could look like ASCUS
* Can herpes he the cause of LSIL or HSIL?
I don't believe so, but an OB would be better at answering that one.
