[Question #13300] Follow-up from last exposure

Dear Doctor,
I am sorry to follow-up on my last last exposure. Here’s a summary of what happened.

I had protected vaginal with a Thai CSW 5 days ago. No breakage, leakage of the condom. I even put water after and all was fine. No holes.
I was so worried so I went to see her 2 days ago with an INSTI Rapid test (the famous Canadian brand) and ask her to test. She did the test. It was negative 1,2,5,10,15,20, 30 min after the test. I put the test in my bag and went back home. When I arrived home (maybe 45 min after) I check the test, and saw a very faint second dot appeared. I panicked obviously. I checked many sources and the sources say it cannot be reliable since the result should not be interpreted after the reading timeframe, these test are not reliable after the reading time and the valid interpretation is negative (the second dot is due to evaporation) . So I went back the day after and ask her to do another INSTI test. Result was negative and stayed negative the whole time, even after one hour.

What’s your assessment Doctor? I am panicking now? Is your original recommendation is still the same? What do you think about the first test (there must be a reason why INSTI says to read the test right away).I even saw guidelines to medical professional that we shouldn’t more than 5 min to read the results.

I can’t test now (too early) and I’m going on holiday with my wife. Can I have unprotected sex with my wife? Sorry about that doctor. Thanks in advance

I'm sorry youare having so much trouble moving on.  The INSTI results are conclusive at 30 minutes but after prolonged periods the positive line may become FALSELY POSITIVE.  Her tests were negative.  You need to accept this a further evidence that you are not at risk from this encounter and move forward.  I hope you will.  EWH---

Thank you Doctor. I don’t mean to bother you with all my questions. Just a few more if you don’t mind.

1) the INSTI test works with dors. Are you referring to the same test? Even her first test is negative?
2) is it common for rapid test to show negative for say 30 min then show a faint second dot say after one hour? Is this why they ask to look at it right away?
3) my chance of being infected is as close to zero as possible and I can definitely close this topic and go back with my normal life without testing ?

You are worrying entirely too much.  When allowed to sit beyond the recommended reading time it is common for the test line to turn positive.  That’s the reason there is a recommendation for when to read the test.  Instructions are to be followed, not ignored

1.  Her test was negative.  Believe the results
2.  Correct
3. Correct
