[Question #13321] Test Accuracy

In November I had multiple UNPROTECTED VAGINAL INTERCOURSE exposures with a girl I met here in the UK (not a sex worker).

I had an HIV 1 & 2 RNA PCR 21 days after the last unprotected exposure. The results were ‘not detected’.

On 11 July (7 months later), I visited a clinic and had blood tests for:

NEGATIVEHIV 1&Il Ab/ p24 Ag screen
NEGATIVEHepatitis B sAg
NEGATIVEHepatitis C Antibody
NEGATIVESyphilis Antibodies IgG/IgM

Do I need any further testing for the above?

Hello Dr Handsfield / Dr Hook

Apologies, but a word limit prevented me from commenting further on my post.

In case you are wondering why I had these blood tests specifically - I have recently secured a job in Bahrain and these ‘infections’ form part of my visa medical. I had these blood tests for peace of mind ahead of my move from the UK next month.

Welcome to the Forum.  Thanks for your questions as well as your explanation as to the reason for testing.  The encounter you describe was low risk- STI rates are relatively low.  The tests you describe all clearly rule out any possibility that you acquired HIV, hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or syphilis.  There is no chance that the tests will become positive in the future unless you are exposed at some time in the future.  There is no need for further testing.  I am confident that your tests required for your visa will show that you were not infected.  EWH---

Good Evening, Doctor Hook

Thank you for your prompt reply.

After reviewing previous posts on this forum, my July results are well past the ‘window period’ for HIV, Hepatitis B/C and Syphilis and they would have been positive by now (please forgive me if I have misunderstood).

In short: you advise putting HIV, Hepatitis B/C and Syphilis out of my head - nothing to worry about at all? (I have had zero intercourse exposures since November’s events)

Lastly, I have been dating a girl for almost a month now. Can I engage in unprotected intercourse with her knowing I am not a risk? (she has shown me her clear test results).

Thank you for taking the time to help me and for establishing such a forum. I will be sure to recommend this service to others.

Your summary is correct.  You can put concerns about having these infections aside.

Of course you can continue to have unprotected sex with your current partner without concern about infecting her.
