[Question #13323] Herptic Whitlow, Herpes spread

Hello Doctors,
I recently visited a massage parlor about 1 Week ago. I have concerns about Herpetic Whitlow. My pinky finger on my left hand has been feeling itchy and has three red bumps on it between the second and third knuckle. I have had this itch for three days now. There is no blisters and no whiteheads showing. It feels itchy under hot water. I received a massage, where the masseuse massaged my hands with oil but I did not feel any rash or harshness on her palms or fingers. Then I was allowed to massage her buttock, not anus or vagina, as well as her breasts and nipples. I wanted to know:
1. Can I get Herpetic Whitlow or herpes from this encounter?
2. How long does Herpetic whitlow take to present itself?
3. Will my family get it if I touch them?
4. Can I spread herpes from my fingers to my genitals, mouth or any other parts of my body?

Thank you for all that you do.

The experience that you had doesn't represent any risk of acquiring HSV on your hands.  The symptoms of herpes whitlow are indeed quite remarkable - very painful blisters on a red base, and you don't get it from someone massaging your hands with oil.
Whitlow normally presents within 3-14 days.
Your family won't get whitlow because I don't believe you have this, is this is your only risk factor
People with whitlow can spread this to other parts of their body when they have a new infection, but again, I don't believe for a moment that you have this

Hi Terri,
Thank you for your response. I feel a little bit better now. The three welts are still red but have not increased in size or shape. I have a follow-up question:
Could someone get Herpetic Whitlow or herpes by touching or rubbing on someone's breasts or nipples if there was infected saliva on them?
Thank you

No worries, there are lots of questions that may seem simple to me but are important to others.  I'm happy to answer.
