[Question #13357] HIV and Syphilis

Good Evening

After having multiple episodes of UNPROTECTED VAGINAL and ORAL sex with an ex-GF (STD status unknown at the time), I had an HIV 1&2 RNA Qualitative PCR. The blood samples were taken 21 days after the last episode of intercourse and the result returned ‘not detected’ for both types within 24 hours.

These episodes occurred 7 months ago and I have had zero intercourse or oral sex exposures since (aside from deep kissing a girl I was briefly dating).

I was recently tested again for HIV (since I have seen some Doctors recommend a follow-up 4th generation to a negative RNA PCR). The HIV 1&Il Ab/p24 Ag result was NEGATIVE.

I also had a Syphilis antibodies test at this latest checkup and it too was NEGATIVE.

Am I all clear from HIV 1&2 and Syphilis since 7 months had passed from the last exposure to when these tests were done?

Thank you for your help.

Welcome to our Forum. Thanks for your questions.  HIV RNA PCR tests provide conclusive results any time more than 11 days following an exposure.  HIV antigen/antibody tests provide conclusive results at any time more than 6 weeks following an exposure.  Similarly syphilis blood tests are conclusive after 6 weeks. Thus you have proven, conclusively, that you did not acquire HIV or syphilis from the exposures to your ex-GF that you describe.  There is no need for further testing related to those exposures (also, there is no risk from deep kissing either)

I hope this information is helpful.  Time to move forward without concern.  EWH

Dr Hook - thank you for your prompt response.

During this latest 7-month check up I was also tested for both Hepatitis B (I was not vaccinated at the time of the unprotected exposures, but have had three doses since) and Hepatitis C.

I understand from reviewing previous posts on this forum that Hepatitis C is not applicable to my situation as anal intercourse did not take place.

My Hepatitis B sAg test was NEGATIVE and my Hepatitis C antibody test was also NEGATIVE

Is your advice that these results are also 100% concrete and move on without any worry whatsoever?

Thank you again for your help.

Your hepatitis B test also proved that you were not infected with hepatitis B.  Now that you are vaccinated, you are protected from hepatitis b and need not test further.

You have also proven you do not have hepatitis C which, as you point out, is NOT an STI.

It's time to move on.  EWH
