Hello Dr Handsfield. After risky intercourse ,my HIV Duo ultra vidas tests were negative on days 42-65-82 and 90 on the 24th day.My guestion is İ took the 90 day test and it was negative. However the same evening İ started having a runny Nasr and sneezing and the next day.İ develo ped a small canker sote in my mouth. Did my test turn positive on day 90? This is starting to scare ne. İ ve never had a canker sote in my mouth.Could it be that ARS symptoms can develop as late as this? Could you briefly explain the science behind the 4th generation tests?Whats the logic behind thems.Doctors in TURKEY insist on sayı g 90 days. Some evden say six months. They font knows about the HIV virüs or they dont understand my tests. Finally is it a coincidence that İ had a negative result on day 90 in the morning and then sneezing a runny nase and then sneezing a runny nase and canker sores in the evening Should get tested again Thank you Dr Handsfield

Welcome back to the Forum. Thanks for your question. On this occasion, I will be responding to your question. To prepare to respond I reviewed your recent interaction with Dr. Handsfield and agree with all that he said. The Vidas HIV test is used throughout the world and is highly reliable. As Dr. Handsfield has already told you, your results at 42 days were conclusive and did not need repeating. Your tests at 65, 82 and 90 days are also conclusive and PROVED that you do not have HIV. There is no need for further testing.
Your symptoms are not the ARS. They are a coincidence. The ARS does not occur after more than 30 days and runny nose and sneezing are NOT signs of the ARS. The symptoms you are experiencing may be a common cold.
4th generation tests test for HIV in two ways. They test for HIV antigen, which represents the presence of the HIV virus itself as well as antibodies to HIV which are produced in response to infection. 4th generation test are more than 98% conclusive at 4 weeks and entirely conclusive any time more than 6 weeks after acquistion of infection.
I hope this information is helpful. You have nothing to worry about and do not need further testing. EWH
