[Question #13455] Herpetic whitlow?

I am middle aged and have tested positive for HSV1 in the past. I didn't used to have any symptoms but in last few years have been having oral symptoms frequently.
Few weeks ago while in the shower saw that skin next to my thumb nail got eroded and there was a small but slightly deep cut with some blood. I thought it might be due to soap etc ( I tend to wash my hands a lot). The wound was getting better for few days but then red swelling developed around it. The wound long time to heal (2 weeks) and swelling faded away. Wpund healed with white colored scan and skin forming on it slowly. I got concerned if it is whitlow due to swelling and long time to heal. I kept applying betadine to the wound. After this I have felt random pins and needles in my fingers of same hand for few seconds at a time. Today morning when I got out of the shower I saw another similar wound (smaller in size) at same location. I didn't pay attention if it was there before I went to the shower.
Does it sound like herpetic whitlow? I am very concerned since after the first episode my kid got very sick with headache and fever (with small sores on his inner cheeks).

This does not sound like whitlow to me, based on the symptoms you describe.  Also, once you have HSV 1 in one location on your body, it is extremely unlikely you would then get this in a new location.  If this continues to be a concern, you could see a dermatologist or your regular PCP for an evaluation, but I seriously doubt that this is HSV
