[Question #13475] Western Blot Result

I tested HSV positive for type 1 some years ago. I got a confirmatory test via the Western Blot that was negative. Since then, I made the Western Blot part of my yearly screening when I do my annual exam. I tested in 2022, a little over 3 months after my last sexual encounter and tested negative for both 1 and 2. I retested in 2023 and got Indeterminate for both types. I re-tested 5 1/2 months later in 2024. Type 1 came back negative, Type 2 was still Indeterminate. I was told it’s likely negative and further testing isn’t recommended. I did my yearly exam this year and re-took it. Type 1 came back negative, but I’m now positive for Type 2. I’ve never been positive for Type 2 for as long I’ve tested for HSV, (10+ years). After my last negative result, (in 2022), I’ve been in a monogamous relationship. He gets tested yearly as well. I’m not sure how to break this news to him, so I’m trying to understand how I could’ve been exposed. He’s the only person I’ve been with and I don’t eat or drink after people. There was an instance where I had pityriasis rosea. After looking into this, I saw that it can sometimes be linked to other forms of HSV. I haven’t been tested for other forms, but could that possibly interfere? What is the likelihood of a false positive with a Western Blot?

This is indeed confusing! Are you saying that your regular partner tested negative for HSV 2 by western blot?
I think it would be helpful for you to have an individual consult with me via telehealth at westoverheights.com. I can reach out to the lab and ask for a review of all of your blots (if the have them all still). Sometimes that is very helpful. Your own provider could also ask for that review if you have a regular provider. You need clarification for sure!

Thank you Terri. My boyfriend doesn’t do regular Western Blot testing. He gets yearly tests at his provider’s office. The last time he tested was two months ago and he was negative. He was also negative when our relationship began and I haven’t had any occur to be an outbreaks. I haven’t noticed any suspected outbreaks on him either. I saw information about another test that is used to clear up Indeterminate results called the flow cytometry based ABVIC test. If UW no longer has my blots, would it make sense to wait a few months and either retake the WB or take the ABVIC? Given my boyfriend is negative and I had two Indeterminate WB results prior, I just feel like something’s off.

The ABVIC test never came to be approved, unless there is something I am unaware of.
If you meet with me, I can ask the lab director to review your blots. Would that be helpful for you?
