[Question #13537] HIV Symptom?

I had a protected oral and vaginal intercourse at a massage parlor in the US 10 days ago. It lasted about 2 mins. Since then I had a lot of anxiety. I got tested after sr 6 days for chlamydia and gonorrhea and it came negative. I’ve been experiencing pain during urination. I saw a doctor today and he said I have fungal infection. I’m uncircumcised. Is this an HIV symptom? Should I tested? Should I get tested for any other STI?

Welcome back to the Forum although I’m sorry you felt the need after asking Dr. Handsfield the same questions. On this occasion I happened to randomly be assigned your questions and, having reviewed Dr. Handsfield’s answers have little to add. Your condom protected exposures were close to no risk and your tests prove that you did not acquire gonorrhea or chlamydia. Your risk for other STIs including HIV is virtually zero.. discomfort during urination is NOT a sign of HIV.
For completeness you might get a urinalysis performed on a urine specimen. If there are no or few white blood cells, then you will have ruled out non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) which is the only potential cause of your symptoms.
My advice is to do your best to stop worrying and move forward without concern. EWH

I did take HIV RNA test after 10 days post exposure. It was negative. You think that’s conclusive given my exposure. Would you suggest taking another exam post 6 weeks if I get any symptoms. Or I should put this behind me and move on regardless of any symptoms. Everything from my urine culture came negative. So I’m not sure how I got this fungal infection. Trying to put this behind me but symptoms make me keep on thinking of this event. Thank you

HIV RNA PCR tests are conclusive any time more than 11 days following a potential exposure. Your ten day result is strong evidence that you were not infected but not conclusive. Personally, I would move on at this time without concern and without feeling the need for further testing.
I encourage you to move forward without concern. EWH

I know I had a low risk exposure and a negative test at 10 days. Is 10 day test atleast 90% accurate?

Final answer.
There are not day-by-day figures to tell you what proportion of tests from newly infected persons are positive. As I said above, at 11 or more days HIV RNA PCR results are conclusive however. It is reasonable to think that a 10 day result would be more than 90% conclusive.
This thread is now complete and will be closed. I would not worry. EWH
