[Question #13563] In regards to #13562

I’m sorry to be back right after my question was closed out. I had forgot to mention something.
I normally use a Vaseline stick for my lips and used it the night before. I can’t recall if I used before I had my lip swabbed. If I did, it would have been at least 30 minutes from using it to my lip being swabbed.
Would this have any effect on the accuracy of the swab?

Just to give a little more detail, the Vaseline stick is similar to chapstick. So like Vaseline in a more solid form.

These were some of the things I read that stated that lip balm or ointments might interfere.

I'm reading something different:

"No effect on assay performance was observed in the presence of a representative brand of the following exogenous substances at 5%W/V or V/V (100% SC): vaginal lubricant; anti-fungal cream; douche; feminine spray; cold sore medication; lip balm; body lotion; body powder; glacial acetic acid wash solution; hemorrhoid cream; cough suppressant; toothpaste; and mouthwash. Oh okay, I must have misread that. Thank you for pointing that out. So, me using a Vaseline stick(similar to chapstick) on my lips the night before and possibly at least 30 minutes prior to the swab wouldn’t affect the accuracy, do you think? The other link said that it would, but I would trust your judgement over that.

This quote is from the makers of the test itself.  I wouldn't be concerned any further about the impact of vaseline on the swab test

I’m sorry Terri, English isn’t my first language, so to worry no further, if it comes back negative, that is accurate?

I can't say it is 100% negative.  The test will tell you if you have virus present on the area that was swabbed at the time.  That's it.  You could be infected but not have virus present at the time an area is swab tested.  An antibody test will tell you if you have antibody to the virus you are looking for or not.  That is the test you need if you believe you were infected but a swab test is negative
