[Question #13591] First Time Anal

I’m bisexual but I never had penetrated sex with a man. I’ve always wanted to bottom. I am 37 years old. I tested over a year ago and I was negative. I always use condoms with women and when it comes to men in just do oral and kissing which I know is low risk. I met a man who is 60 years old. The was married to a woman for over 30 years but she is now deceased. He claims he gets tested yearly and that he is clean. Like you said in your answers to people that most people do not lie about their status. We are going to have sex this week for the first time. I will be the bottom. I bought water based lubricant because I know all other lubricants can weaken the condom. I know the FDA just approved an anal sex condom but I haven’t been able to find it. Will a regular condom still be as effective? If the condom is on through the whole time and used properly will my chances of HIV be low? I know he stated that he is clean but sometimes people do lie. Any other preparations that I should take?

Welcome back to the forum. Thanks for your confidence in our services and for reading other discussions with questions similar to your own.

You're clearly going about your expanding sexuality with great responsibility:  congratulations. It seems very unlikely your prospective partner has HIV or other significant STI, but of course I endorse the use of condoms. I am unaware of a particular condom being "FDA approved for anal sex" and have trouble imagining it to be significantly different than those intended for contraception or vaginal sex -- but maybe tougher than usual latex or polyurethane (?) -- since breakage is believed to be more common with anal than vaginal sex. In any case, you are correct that an intact condom of any sort is nearly 100% protective against HIV from anal sex.

"Any other precautions that I should take?" The only idea that comes to mind is pre-exposure testing, ideally for both of you. Negative HIV and syphilis blood tests and negative gonorrhea/chlamydia testing (of the appropriate anatomic sites) should reassure you and perhaps your partner.

I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Last question. Besides water lubricants what is another lubricant that won’t weaken the condom

There has been no reported research on this; all we know is that oil-based lubricants can weaken latex and lead to breakage. Even oil based lubes are considered to be safe with non-latex condoms, e.g. polyurethane.---
