Hi there.

I'm interested in better understanding transmission reduction through the use of antiviral medication like valacyclovir etc. I carry HSV1g and Ive been told that if these antivirals are taken daily then it greatly reduces the chance for transmission and possibly shedding. I want to know if the medication sis as effective if taken in periods, like every day starting few days before planned sex or does it need to be taken 7 days a week 365 days a year to remain effective?

We have more data on the use of antivirals for transmission reduction but I think it is relatively safe to say it works in a very similar way for HSV 1.  You'll need to take the meds for five days before they are fully effective and then for as long as you plan to be sexually active.  It does not need to be taken for a full year unless you plan to be sexually active for that full  year.  I hope that is helpful.
