I'm sorry to be back here, I have been full of anxiety. I messaged previously about unprotected oral with a female. I mentioned in the last post that I kissed my partner on the lips 48 hours after exposure, my child also kissed me on the lips within the 5 days before I started taking doxycycline. Two and a half weeks later, my child has developed a painful yellow sore accompanied by cough and sneezing. He said his face hit a branch and a day or 2 later he noticed the sore. I'm still a couple of weeks out from testing for syphilis. I had no noticeable lesion on my lips at the time of kissing either my partner or my child. To add further I upped my dose from 100mg for 6 to 200mg for 10 days. I drank heavily for a few days over the course. I am beset with fear. I know you said syphilis can't be transmitted before 2 weeks, but I keep thinking that I'll be the exception, that I had a hidden lesion somewhere. I'm reaching out for your expertise.
Thank you

Welcome back to the Forum although I'm sorry you felt the need. In preparing to respond I reviewed your recent interaction with Dr. Handsfield and agree with all that he said. Your risk for syphilis, if there was any risk at all, was miniscule. The symptoms you describe are likely due to some other non-STI process. Cough and sneezing are not symptoms of syphilis. Have you asked your pediatrician what is going on?
You can assure yourself that you could not have transmitted syphilis to your daughter (or wife) by testing at this time. If the test is negative, you could not have transmitted infection. EWH

Thank you for your response. I only stopped taking the doxycycline over a week ago. I read that I need to wait 4 weeks after last dose to test. The test will be an EIA test. When the time comes it will 8 weeks post exposure. If it were just me on my own I would not be anywhere near as concerned. If positive, as unlikely as you feel it'll be, I would of course disclose that she had an ulcer. But that frightens me. As for her ulcer it's responding well to topical gel if that helps. It has been there for just over a week now. Can transmission happen in such a short time frame, days after exposure, with no visible lesions?

Your information is incorrect. The issue of testing for diagnosis is different from determining whether or not you could have transmitted the infection. If your test is negative at this time you could not have transmitted syphilis. What appears to be intense guilt and unwarranted paranoia is allowing you to be misled, perhaps by the internet.
The sore you described appeared early to be a syphilis lesion.
What is the gel your daughter is being treated with? Did the doctor mention a tentative diagnosis.
One follow up remaining. EWH

I am allowing fear to take over, and I apologise for that. With the ulcer appearing, it set off a series of irrational thoughts which until I test, I cant put them to rest. So again I'm sorry.
- From your response, and from my rational side, I haven't infected anybody seeing as no chancre or lesion developed. I could not have infected anyone within 48 hours to 6 days after exposure through a dry kiss. Am I correct in this?
- My child's lesion is not an STI and you're simply saying they should go to the doctor for proper evaluation, not because you believe they are infected but because that's the proper thing to do.
- Next week will be 6 weeks since exposure, that's normally what you state is conclusive, you are saying that even though my treatment ended, by that time 2.5 weeks ago, it will not impact the accuracy. Am I correct?
- If I test negative I will put this to bed.
- To answer your question its a topical cream called Bonjela. It's over the counter medicine for mouth ulcers. We haven't taken her to the doctors yet as they recommend going if its not gone by 2 weeks. We're at around day 10. As for her she had a branch hit her in the face on around the 1st of January. I kissed her on the lips on the 13th of December. Around the 4th or 5th of January she complained of her ulcer. We only started treating it 2 days ago.
So once again apologies for being over dramatic, and you're quite right, the Internet has fueled a lot of my fears.

As you point out, you have allowed fear (and guilt I suspect) to take over. You need to get past that. That involves staying off the internet and if you have trouble stopping your concerns, seeking counseling to help you move forward. These fears have to be impacting not only you but your family. I say this out of concern, nothing more!
Internet reports that you need to wait longer to prove that you cannot have infected your child, as well as that you do not have syphilis are overstated and misleading. Get your test and when it is negative, move forward. You results will be accurate and justify moving forward.
The cream you are using is an aspirin like anti-inflammatory and mild anesthetic. If the lesion is healing, that reflects the natural course of healing.
This completes this thread which will be closed shortly. After it has been, there should be no need to return and if you do with further anxiety-driven questions, they may not receive a response and your posting fee will not be returned. You are not gaining anything with repeated questions of this sort.
I wish you the best. Take care. EWH
