[Question #13776] HIV not from sex

Hi Doctors

I have secured my dream job in Qatar and I am due to fly out next week. As part of my visa on arrival, I am tested for HIV and Hepatitis B (I am vaccinated against the latter).

I am nervous as I did something out of character 2 weeks ago on a stag do. In a bar I DEEP FRENCH KISSED a random female who I got talking to. We went back to the hotel and deep kissed further; and I also FINGERED HER VAGINA.

I have browsed HealthTap and note that some GP’s are saying the above are risky events and testing is advised. However (with no disrespect to them), I prefer to consult STI Doctors like yourselves.

I have consulted a clinic near me who deal with Middle East visa medicals. The Doctor said these events put me at NO RISK of HIV. He added that there is zero need to ever think about HIV until I (1) inject drugs, (2) have unprotected vaginal / anal sex with an unknown partner; or (3) get covered in blood (i.e as a bystander to a traumatic accident).

He added that I should move on with no worries at all.

Can I move on with my new life without any worry, as this Doctor has advised?

Thank you very much.

Welcome to our Forum.  Thanks for your implied confidence in our service.  Congratulations on your new position.

I'm pleased to be able to confirm the information that you received from the clinic.  Unlike what you saw on the internet, the doctor you spoke with is correct, the activities you describe- prolonged deep French kissing and masturbation of your partner are no risk activities for HIV and for other STIs.  I would have no worries that your test will be abnormal.  Further, hepatitis B is rarely acquired through sexual intercourse and  your vaccination offers virtually complete protection from infection.

I encourage you to more forward without concern.  Please let me know if any part of this message is unclear.  You have up to 2 follow ups.  EWH

Thank you, Dr Hook. The exposures were solely deep kissing and masturbation of her vagina.

My main concern was HIV. The bar we were in was dark and therefore I could not tell if the female had any cuts in the mouth or on her lips.

I did not put this in my original post, however, the Doctor at the clinic also advised that even if there was some blood in the mouth, this would equally be NO RISK for HIV to a partner (aka. me).

He said there is never a reason to fear HIV when passionately kissing someone (or to test afterwards, unless it also involved unprotected intercourse).

1. Do you agree with the above?

2. Can I engage in unprotected intercourse with my current GF?

Your expertise is so greatly appreciated. I just want to move forward with excitement about my new chapter.

Thanks for your follow-up questions:

1.  I do agree that even with blood in her mouth (or dental disease) there would still be no meaningful risk for HIV.
2.  Based on the information you have provided, I see no reason to abstain from unprotected sex with your regular partner

Once again, I encourage you to not worry and move forward without concern.  EWH
