[Question #13805] Concerns(HPV)

Hello
I’m a 20yo male . About six, seven months ago, there was a one-time encounter(with female), mainly involving genital rubbing(few minutes?between a very thin layer of clothing) and kissing(quite intense and my lip was a little dry). I did not take it seriously at first. But I have become a little obsessive recently. I feel I have few things to confirm.
1. I happened to have a body check-up two months after the interaction so I believe I can rule out some STDs. Also, there were no visible warts spotted on my genitals so far. However I find out that HPV, especially the high-risk types, can also potentially cause certain problems such as cancer. So can you please help me understand the risk of the HPV infection from the activity, especially those high-risk types.
2. As I know, many people do not recommend men testing on HPV. Dose it mean that negative results for men is meaningless? Also, will the effect of HPV vaccine differ between women and men?
3. Can the window period for syphilis and HIV be affected by using antibiotics? Is it completely safe with negative results after two months? Thank you for your reply

Welcome to our forum. Thank you for your questions. I’ll be glad to provide some information. The encounter you describe was no risk in terms of acquisition of HPV and other STI’s. STI‘s are not transmitted through clothing, even if that clothing is wet with genital secretions. Likewise, kissing does not put you at meaningful risk for acquisition of STI’s either. Please remember as well that most unvaccinated sexually active persons ( over 80%) acquire HPV within a year or two of the onset of sexual activity. In response to your specific questions.:
1. You are correct that there is an association of so-called “ high risk” HPV with cancers however only about 2% of those infections go on to cause cancer. The remainder resolve over a year or two even without therapy. As I said above, the encounter you describe does not put you at risk for infection.
2. the HPV vaccine is the best way to prevent HPV and reduce the small risk of cancer. It is highly effective and recommended for both men and women. As you mention, HPV testing is not recommended for males. A negative test is hard to interpret and of little prognostic value.
3. Results of both syphilis and HIV blood tests are conclusive after six weeks. Effective antibiotics can prevent or cure syphilis but do not effect blood tests results or timing.

Thank you, doctor , for your detailed and helpful information.
You mentioned that contacting wet clothing with genital secretions is not a way how HPV and other STI's transfer. But if there is a situation that direct contact between the genitals happened(External, without penetration) , what level of risk would it be? Also, I would like to know what kind of activities primarily transfer oral HPV if it cannot be transfered by kissing.

With direct contact there certainly is a theoretical risk, however, in practice, this is a rare occurrence.
There are a few data regarding transfer of oral HPV through kissing. Compared to genital infections or oral HPV infections are uncommon and kissing, including deep, French kissing, is an inefficient mechanism of transfer. I would have a few concerns. EWH.

Once again thank you for the response doctor. Perhaps I am somehow overthinking about it. I should definitely find a time to get vaccinated.

As you know, we provide up to 3 responses to each client's questions. This is my final response.
I agree with your plans to get the vaccine. It is the single best thing you can do to prevent HPV. It is safe and highly effective.
This completes this thread. Take care. EWH
