I am HSV-1 negative. A donor I’m considering is HSV-1 positive. If semen is collected in a cup and inseminated without skin-to-skin contact, what is the realistic transmission risk to me and to a future pregnancy?

Half of the adults in the US are HSV 1 positive, so it is very common indeed.  Most is oral but some is genital.  But when HSV 1 is in the genital area, it is rarely given off from the body.  It would be good to know if the donor knows if the infection is oral or genital.  If it is oral, there is no risk of you acquiring it genitally through semen donation.  If they don't know where the HSV 1 infection is, the risk is still very low that you would acquire it genitally 1) because HSV 1 is rarely shed from the genital tract and 2) semen is not a good carrier of virus.
