[Question #13884] HSV1G F to M - 8 yrs from Initial Outbreak

It’s been 8 years since my initial genital outbreak (was swabbed, came back HSV1). I would like to engage in intercourse with a new (circumcised) male partner. I am taking daily Valocyclivir and he will use a condom. What do I tell him in terms of risk transmission? I’ve never had another outbreak and I’ve never had a cold sore on my mouth. I don’t know if he has ever had a cold sore. Thank you!

It might be good to find out if he is HSV 1 positive - half the adults in the US are positive for HSV 1. If he is, there is no worries. But even if he isn't positive, with you on suppression and him using condoms, the risk is just about zero anyway. People who have been infected with genital HSV 1 for two years (and you, way longer) shed virus on about 4 days out of a year. And with you having no recurrences, it is likely even lower!

Thank you! I am in Ontario, Canada. Is there a specific blood test to check if he has HSV1 antibodies? Also, if we did not want to use a condom, is the risk only slightly higher?

Not a specific test, not really. You could do the western blot at UW but it requires quite a bit of work coming from Canada.
Without a condom, the risk is only very slightly higher for you - VERY! If I were in your situation, I wouldn't be worried.
