[Question #13896] HIV

Dear Experts:
I ended up staying over at a date’s house. We shared the same bed but did not have any kind of intercourse or oral sex. We did, however, end up deep kissing for a while before going to sleep (I would say 5-10 minutes maximum).
The next morning I woke up and there was a small blood patch on the pillow next to me. It was not from me. I did not ask my partner about it, but my worry is that it was from her mouth and we had been deep kissing.
I would never kiss someone if I could openly see lots of blood and I do not recall tasting any after we had deep kissed.
My date and I have since gone our separate ways.
I visited my GP today for an unrelated medical issue and briefly asked about STI’s (particularly HIV). She said that even if my partner was positive and had a cut or blood in her mouth when we deep kissed, this would not put me at any risk of HIV.
She added that aside from oral herpes (which apparently is no longer classed as an STI?), no STI is transmitted by deep kissing.
Her medical advice is not to test for any STI, and said that HIV is only transmitted via 4 mechanisms: (1) unprotected vaginal/anal sex, (2) sharing needles; (3) exposure to huge amounts of blood like you would see in a traumatic accident; and (rarely) (4) oral sex penis-mouth.
My GP told me that I can’t possibly be infected with HIV or any other STI and this has been a great comfort hearing this from someone medically qualified. However, I would also appreciate your insights as STI experts (with no disrespect to her at all).
Kind regards

Welcome to our Forum and thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to add my comments to those of your well informed GP. She is correct, there are no STIs and that are meaningful transmitted through deep kissing, even if your partner has a bleeding lesion in their mouth or dental /gum problems. In addition, the duration of kissing makes no difference as well. I agree with your doctor's assessment and see no scientific need for testing or for concern.
Please don't worry. EWH
