[Question #13899] Blood and eye

Dear doctors:
I know this is probably no risk but just want to make sure.
I was getting a shoulder MRI at the image center and realized that the dr had an injured finger. It was mostly covered with a bandaid but not entirely and that's what worried me. He told me he got injured opening an ampoule. When he was accommodating me and the machine, I was lying down and at some point his injured hand passed over my face and I felt some drop/splash inside my eye. I am afraid it was a drop/splash of blood from the uncovered part of his injured finger.
If that was the case and a drop or a splash of blood fell inside my eye directly from his finger which was only centimeters away, would that blood in my eye constitute a risk for hiv?
Thanks so much for your help as I have a 9 month old baby and have developed a lot of anxiety.

Welcome to our forum. Thank you for your questions. I’ll be glad to comment.
The risk of acquiring HIV or any other infection from the events you describe is virtually nonexistent. There is little chance that your doctor has untreated HIV. Furthermore, there was no evidence that the wound on his finger was actively bleeding at the time he was caring for you. Had a drop of blood entered your eye. It would’ve been quite obvious..
While I understand how having a new baby at home can tend to make a person hyper aware of risks, this was really a no risk event. I see no scientific reason for concern and no reason for testing. Please don’t worry. EWH.

Thanks so much, Dr Hook. You are so helpful! So just to make sure I understand, even if what I felt in my eye would have been blood from the drs injury, it would still be a no risk event, right?

Still no risk. If something got into your eye blinking, which is an involuntary reflex would remove it. Please don’t worry. EWH---
